Home Sweet Home

July 26, vs. Seattle

Juan Pierre
Gordon Beckham

Pierre drove home 2 runs and had 3 hits from the lead-off spot, while Gordon cooled from his recent hot streak, going 0-4.

Short Take:  Sox put road struggles in rear-view mirror as Danks outpitches King Felix for 6-1 win.

A 5-5 road trip through Minnesota and the West Coast is usually a reason for celebration, but considering the Sox blew 2 saves and could have won 2 more, with a pair of division rivals nipping at your heels, well, there was an air of concern at the Cell tonight.  Adding Felix Hernandez, the only reason to still acknowledge the Mariners' existence, to the mix and there was legitimate concern amongst the faithful.  But John Danks continued to cement himself as the new Sox ace, pitching 8 strong innings while the offense scored early and often as the Sox pounded Seattle 6-1.

Though Danks fell behind early, 1-0, he was marvelous tonight.  8 innings, 6 hits, a pair of strike outs, and the lone run were enough for his 11th win of the season and more importantly, went deep into the game after the bullpen pitched 9.2 innings the last two days in Oakland.  Yeah, the Mariners suck, but this was a crucial game for the Sox and they aced it.

After Seattle scored 1 in the 3rd, the Sox roared back in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of runs, back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Juan Pierre and Omar Vizquel put the Sox back in front to stay.  As if six runs off a premier starter like Felix weren't impressive enough, but Juan and Omar's RBIs set the pace, 4 of their 6 runs tonight came with two outs.  Paul Konerko, however, did things the easy way, jacking his 22nd homer of the season to lead off the 6th to really put the game out of reach.  Pierre, Alexei Ramirez and even A.J. Pierzynski added RBIs to round out the scoring.

Sergio Santos pitched a perfect 9th after the Sox added 2 in the 8th to put it out of save territory for the slumping Bobby Jenks.  The win means the Sox keep pace with the surging Twins who pulverized Zack Greinke and the Royals, and pick up a game on the slumping Tigers, who were not hit by Matt Garza in Tampa Bay.  Tomorrow night, Gavin Floyd totes the hill against Ryan Rowland-Smith.  Game time is 7:10 PM Chicago time and the game will be broadcast on Comcast Sports Net.

TBGR Diary:
Great game overall.  Danks is strong, offense rolls.  Can we play 64 more like this?
