Danks Delivers

July 8 vs. Los Angeles

Alex Rios and Paul Konerko
Omar Vizquel

Rios provided two of the three hits for the Sox. Konerko hit the sac fly that drove in the only run of the game. While no one was particularly bad today since Santana was practically unhittable, Vizquel DID commit an error. Luckily it didn't hurt the Sox.

Short Take:   Sox complete four-game sweep of Angels behind Danks's gem

On a hot sunny afternoon, the White Sox completed the four-game sweep of the Angels at US Cellular Field. Behind the spectacular pitching from starter John Danks, the Sox pulled off a 1-0 win.

The last time the White Sox won a game 1-0 at home was September 30, 2008. The Blackout Game. Danks pitched brilliantly that night, and this afternoon was no different. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and he pitched a complete game shutout allowing two hits. Not only did he allow just those two hits, he struck out seven batters and didn't allow a walk. To top that off, he threw 111 pitches, and 81 of them were strikes. The bullpen needed a break, and luckily Danks was able to provide it.

While Danks was shining for the Sox, Angels starter Ervin Santana pitched well himself. He also pitched a complete game, throwing 104 pitches with 64 for strikes. The Sox only managed to get three hits off Santana throughout the game, but they were still lucky enough to win the game. The only run scored in the game came in the bottom of the first inning. To lead off, Santana hit Juan Pierre with a pitch. After Omar Vizquel flied out to left, Alex Rios hit his 19th double of the season, moving Pierre to third. Paul Konerko, showing why he should have been an all-star from the beginning, hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Pierre.

The only other offense the Sox managed to muster was a single from AJ Pierzynski in the second, a single from Rios in the third, walks to Vizquel in the third and eighth, and a walk to Jones in the fifth. If not for Rios's double and Konerko's sac fly, this game could have gone into extra innings, and it could have been a disaster. Instead, the Sox ended with a sweep, a rested bullpen, and the knowledge they are half a game out of first place.

Kansas City comes to town for a three-game set before the All-Star break. Mark Buehrle faces Bruce Chen at 7:10pm on Comcast SportsNet.

TBGR Diary:
Despite the fact I have a ridiculous sunburn, this was the best game I've ever been to. Danks was on fire! However, I'm a bit disappointed Paulie didn't win the Final Man vote.
