Sox Sink Deep in the Heart of Texas

July 3rd against the Texas Rangers

Immunity:
Juan Pierre
Exiled:
Andruw Jones

Juan did the true leadoff-hitter thing tonight, making it happen and scoring the lone run. Jones? The less said the better.

Short Take:John Danks was wild and the Sox bats were mild as they lost to the Texas Rangers 3-1 in Arlington.

The White Sox looked weak tonight, losing to the Texas Rangers 3-1. John Danks started the game and was lucky he only gave up two runs in his six innings, seeing as how he couldn't find the strike zone for the first three innings. His mound opponent was Tommy Hunter, who was in the drivers seat and was crusin'.

Since the game wasn't much to talk about, how about a little song? Sing with me now, to the tune of "Deep In The Heart of Texas":

As Hunter throws
The White Sox froze
(clap-clap-clap-clap)
Deep in the heart of Texas

It can't get done
With just one run
(clap-clap-clap-clap)
Deep in the heart of Texas

R-I-S-P
Means much to me
(clap-clap-clap-clap)
Deep in the heart of Texas

I don't ask much:
Hit in the clutch
(clap-clap-clap-clap)
Deep in the heart of Texas

Enough of that. Here's what little there is to describe:

There was trouble brewing right away in the first when John Danks walked the first hitter he faced, Elvis Andrus. Fortunately a double play took care of that and no damage was done. But in the Rangers' second, one-out singles by Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz, and a walk to Bengie Molina, allowed Joaquin Arias to get an RBI on a grounder to short, making it 1-0 Rangers after two.

The Rangers scored again in the fifth after a leadoff single by Arias and a sac bunt by Julio Borbon set up Elvis to single home Arias for Texas' second run. Now it's 2-0 Rangers after five, which wouldn't be a concern if the Sox would hit in a meaningful way. But it wasn't meant to be.

Tony Pena came in to pitch the seventh for the Sox, promptly giving up singles to Cruz and Molina and putting runners on first and third. Erick Threets came in at this point and got Justin Smoak to hit into a double play, which was nice, but which also allowed Cruz to score.

The Sox blinked awake in the eighth as Hunter seemed to come to earth, walking Juan Pierre and giving up a single to Alexei Ramirez. Frank Francisco came in to pitch for Texas and balked on a move toward the runners (this was remarkable, as Joe West was not involved). Alex Rios' groundout to second allowed Pierre to score. But Paul Konerko struck out and Andruseless Jones flew out weakly to end the inning. The score now sat at 3-1 Rangers in the eighth.

Brent Lillibridge pinch-hit for Mark Kotsay in the ninth and doubled. A.J. Pierzynski grounded out to the right side, moving Lillibridge to third. But strikeouts by pinch-hitter Carlos Quentin and by Gordon Beckham ended things with a whimper.

The Sox at night
Are weak and light
(clap-clap-clap-clap)
Deep in the heart of Texas

We'll hope for more
In Sunday's score
(clap-clap-clap-clap)
Deep in the heart of Texas

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
Kenny, please find that consistently-hitting DH before the trade deadline. You know, someone who can actually hit when designated?
