Tigers Tamed

June 10 vs. Detroit

Omar Vizquel
Sergio Santos

Vizquel is hitting. And well. A homer in the first and a successful squeeze in the sixth. Nobody played horribly today, but Santos is exiled for trying to do his best Bobby Jenks by loading the bases in the eighth.

Short Take:   Danks looks excellent, Vizquel shows muscle as Sox top Tigers

Last night, the Chicago White Sox had a big game. Today, they continued their winning ways, as they beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 at US Cellular Field. John Danks picked up his fifth win, and Max Scherzer picked up his sixth loss.

As in most of his starts, Danks looked incredible. Over seven innings, he allowed one hit and four walks while striking out four. The one hit he allowed came in the second inning when Carlos Guillen hit a two-out single to center. However, Danks got Brandon Inge to ground out to third to end the inning. After walking Miguel Cabrera in the fourth and Johnny Damon in the sixth, Danks cruised into the seventh. He led off the inning by walking Cabrera again but induced a Brennan Boesch double play. The next batter was Guillen, and Danks walked him. Ozzie came out for a quick chat, and Danks finished the inning unscathed.

Bullpen relief was a little iffy. Bobby Jenks looked good in the ninth, allowing a two-out hit to Inge before retiring Gerald Laird to pick up his tenth save. However, Sergio Santos in the eighth wasn't as dominant as Sox fans have come to expect. To lead off the inning, Laird singled to center. Santos got pinch hitter Ramon Santiago to strike out swinging, but he gave up back-to-back walks to Austin Jackson and Damon to load the bases. Ryan Raburn popped out to first, and Cabrera struck out swinging to allow Santos to get out of the inning.

The offense was minimal today, but it was still effective. Omar Vizquel hit his first home run of the season in the first. It was the first home run he had hit since last August, and if I remember correctly, it was his second since 2007. Paul Konerko singled on a pop up to second in the fourth inning, but the Sox weren't able to do anything with it. Alexei Ramirez hit a two-out single in the fifth but was caught stealing with Gordon Beckham batting to end the inning.

The Sox notched another run in the sixth inning. To lead off the inning, Beckham doubled to center, and Juan Pierre moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt. Then Vizquel came through again. He hit a sacrifice bunt to third that scored Beckham. The last run of the game came on a solo home run by AJ Pierzynski in the eighth.

The Sox travel to Wrigley tomorrow for the first game of the series of the now disastrously named BP Crosstown Cup. Jake Peavy looks for his fifth win, as he faces Randy Wells who is looking for his fourth win. You can hear Hawk and Stone on WGN tomorrow afternoon at 1:20pm.

TBGR Diary:
Two wins in a row? I like that. More wins in a row. Vizquel looks awesome, and I'm pretty bummed he'll be gone for the Cubs series. I like this "flying high" feeling I've had since yesterday, so maybe it can last longer than a day.
