Dear Offense: Where Did You Go?

May 27 at Tampa Bay

Gavin Floyd
Mark Kotsay

Despite giving up three runs, Floyd looked better than in previous outings. Kotsay went 0-for-3, and when he was walked in the second, he ran to third for an unsuccessful steal.

Short Take:   Offense forgets to show up as Sox fall to Rays

Yet again, the White Sox offense looked amazingly lackluster, as they fell to the Tampa Bay Rays 5-2 in St. Petersburg. Jeff Niemann picked up his fifth win, and Gavin Floyd picked up his fifth loss.

Floyd looked a lot better in tonight's outing. He only gave up four hits and a walk, but two of those hits were solo home runs to Carl Crawford in the first and to Evan Longoria in the sixth. The other run charged to Floyd came in the fifth. He hit Sean Rodriguez with a pitch and allowed a single to Reid Brignac. Jason Bartlett popped out to Gordon Beckham, and Beckham made a great throw to Mark Teahen at third, trying to get Rodriguez out. Had the ball not taken a big bounce on the fake turf, Beckham might have gotten the out at third. However, Rodriguez was safe at third, and Brignac was safe at second. Crawford hit a sac fly to left, and Rodriguez scored.

Scott Linebrink replaced Floyd in the eighth, and the Rays scored two more runs. After striking out Ben Zobrist, Linebrink allowed back-to-back singles to Longoria and John Jaso. I'm not exactly sure how to word what happened when Hank Blalock was up to bat, so I'll just quote what MLB Gameday says: "With Hank Blalock batting, Evan Longoria steals (8) 3rd base, John Jaso to 2nd. Wild pitch by pitcher Scott Linebrink. John Jaso to 2nd." Blalock then singled to center, scoring Longoria and Jaso. Linebrink then hit Carlos Pena with a pitch before striking out Rodriguez and Brignac.

The Sox had a bit of an offensive threat that Mark Kotsay effectively killed in the second inning. After Paul Konerko struck out, Niemann walked Kotsay and Andruw Jones. Teahen struck out, and during Alexei Ramirez's at-bat, Kotsay attempted to steal third. Bad idea, bad base running, and the inning was over with the caught stealing.

Alex Rios got the first White Sox hit in the fourth inning and stole second during a Konerko at-bat. However, neither Konerko nor Kotsay could drive him in. In the sixth, Beckham singled to center, but after Juan Pierre struck out, AJ Pierzynski grounded into a double play. To lead off the seventh, Alex Rios walked, but like in every other inning, no one was able to drive him in.

The Sox finally managed to get on the board in the eighth inning. Leading off the inning, Teahen hit his third home run of the season to right field. The last hit of the game was a single by Pierzynski in the ninth, and the Sox lost again.

The South Siders will try for a win tomorrow. Freddy Garcia looks for his fourth win of the season as he faces David Price who is looking for his eighth win. You can catch the game on Comcast SportsNet at 6:10pm.

TBGR Diary:
I can't decide what I hated more tonight: the complete lack of offense or those ridiculously annoying cowbells. If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably choose repeatedly punching myself in the face. Also, domes suck no matter what city they're in.
