Sox (Finally) Take Down Toons

May 24 at Cleveland

Immunity:
The Bullpen
Exiled:
Alexei Ramirez

Santos, Thornton, Putz and Jenks were all sharp in this game. Ramirez made a silly error in the ninth. It had no effect on the outcome, but I grow weary of his lapses in concentration.

Short Take: The Sox score some runs early for John Danks and break an embarrassing 5-game losing streak vs. the last-place Indians.

So, the Cleveland Indians are mortal after all. The White Sox entered Monday night's game with a lowly 1-5 record against the last-place Tribe. In fact, the South Siders had lost the last five head-to-head meetings with the Indians since beating them on Opening Day.

Fortunately, some early offense and good work from John Danks and four relievers put an end to that embarrassing streak, as the Sox came away with a relatively easy 7-2 victory.

Cleveland starter Justin Masterson (0-5) hasn't won a game since last August, and the Sox hitters kept him on the skids by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Three of the runs scored after two were out, highlighted by Mark Teahen's two-run double.

Teahen added an RBI single in the seventh inning and finished the night 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Alex Rios hit a solo home run in the ninth inning, while Juan Pierre, A.J. Pierzynski, Omar Vizquel and Gordon Beckham added two hits each as the White Sox offense actually looked pretty good.

Danks (4-3) wasn't at his best. He threw 112 pitches in five innings, allowing two runs. He did work out of a second-and-third, no-outs jam in the third inning. He also pitched over a Teahen error in the fifth. But with the high pitch count, it was a given the Sox bullpen would become involved in this game.

Sergio Santos, Matt Thornton, J.J. Putz and Bobby Jenks each worked a scoreless inning to protect the lead. The foursome allowed only three baserunners (one on an error) combined. The Indians didn't have a hit after the sixth inning.

The win gets this seven-game trip off on the right foot. The Sox will try to make it two in a row Thursday night behind right-hander Jake Peavy (3-3, 5.74 ERA). Mitch Talbot (5-3, 3.88), who tossed a complete game in beating the Sox back in April, will be on the mound for the Toons. The game begins at 6:05 and will air on Comcast SportsNet Plus.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
I was really worried the crappy Masterson would break his long losing streak at the Sox expense. Fortunately, the Sox hung another 'L' on him.
