Walkerball anyone?

May 19 vs. Los Angeles Angels

John Danks
Jayson Nix

Jayson Nix is lucky he's still in baseball. He made two errors on the same play and cost the Sox a run.

Short Take: John Danks pitches well as usual, but inept offense and lousy defense leads to another Sox loss.

John Danks made one bad pitch during his outing against the Los Angeles Angels Wednesday night at U.S. Cellular Field. Just one bad pitch! Unfortunately, with Greg Walker's hitters on the case, that's enough to get Sox pitchers beat this season.

Danks (3-3) turned in his seventh quality start in eight outings this year, allowing three runs (two earned) over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and allowed only three hits, but the White Sox still managed to lose 3-2 thanks to their inept offense.

Torii Hunter connected for a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning to give the Angels a 2-1 lead. That was the only hit Danks allowed the first seven innings of the contest.

The Sox had a great opportunity to tie the score in the sixth, but naturally, they blew it. Gordon Beckham walked and Juan Pierre reached on a bunt single. Jayson Nix executed a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with only one out. But Anaheim lefty Joe Saunders (3-5) induced Andruw Jones to pop out to second base. After an intentional unintentional walk to Paul Konerko loaded the bases, Alex Rios flew out to end the threat.

Danks ran into trouble in the eighth, giving up a pair of singles. He should have been out of the inning unscathed, though, on a grounder to third off the bat of Erick Aybar. Instead, Nix made two errors on the play and gave the Angels an insurance run. 3-1 ballgame.

The extra run proved critical as the Sox made it a little interesting in the ninth when Konerko hit a solo home run off Brian Fuentes to make it 3-2. A.J. Pierzynski singled and pinch-runner Omar Vizquel moved up to second on a passed ball, placing the tying run in scoring position with two outs. Alas, Alexei Ramirez swung through a Fuentes fastball that was right down the middle for strike three. Game over. Sox lose.

The South Siders will try again tomorrow when they host the Angels for the second of this brief two-game set. Hopefully, Jake Peavy (3-2, 5.37 ERA) throws a shutout. Ervin Santana (2-3. 4.25 ERA) might be a mediocre pitcher, but I never expect the Sox to score any runs these days.

TBGR Diary:
Only 123 games to go. Fire Walker.
