A Battle of the Jakes at the Jake

April 17 at Cleveland Indians

Jake Peavy
Matt Thornton

Jake went 7 1/3 strong innings at the Jake (er, Progressive Field), but Matt Thornton failed to hold the tie, serving up the go-ahead run for the Tribe.

Short Take:   Jake Peavy had a solid outing for the South Siders, but one mistake in the eighth to Asdrubal Cabrera proved to be too much for Peavy and the Sox to overcome.

With the game time temperature a chilly 44°, the Battle of the Jakes (Peavy and Westbrook) was going to be a chilly one. Peavy and Westbrook matched one another pitch-for-pitch into the seventh, but it was Cleveland's Asdrubal Cabrera who got the best of the Sox's number two starter in the home half of the eighth, tying the game. Ultimately, Matt Thornton relieved Peavy and served up the go-ahead run. Sox lose, 3-2.

Things looked promising for the Sox almost immediately when Gordon Beckham hit a one out double to deep left in the top of the first. However, Carlos Quentin lined out to second and Beckham was doubled off to end whatever threat existed just moments earlier. The Indians wasted no time scoring a run in the home half, though. Grady Sizemore tripled with one out and came home on an odd play by Shin-Soo Choo, who was out on an appeal for missing first base. Sizemore scored and just like that, the Indians were up 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth when the Sox finally broke through. Mark Teahen walked, stole second, and came home on Alexei Ramirez's double to deep left. The Sox added one more an inning later, courtesy of Alex Rios. After Paul Konerko grounded out to start the inning, Andruw Jones singled and went to second on A.J. Pierzynski's ground out. Alex Rios followed with a double, allowing Jones to score the go-ahead run easily.

It seemed simple. The Sox were up 2-1 and all they had to do was hang on for two innings. But, with the way the season has started for the Sox, we all knew that would be a tumultuous task... and it was. Peavy was still pitching and showed signs of fatigue when, with one out in the home half of the eighth, he surrendered a one out solo shot to Asdrubal Cabrera, tying the game at two. Ozzie went to get him in favor of Matt Thornton, who's usually lights out... except for this afternoon. He surrendered a base hit to Grady Sizemore, who scored the go-ahead and eventual winning run on Shin-Soo Choo's double.

Something typical happened in the top of the ninth- the Sox went 1-2-3 and showed nothing resembling a scoring threat. Matt Thornton takes the loss in this one, and the Sox fall to 4-8 and five games out of first behind the hated Twins. The Sox look to salvage one game of this three-game series tomorrow afternoon at Progressive Field. Gavin Floyd (0-1, 4.50 ERA) will pitch for the Sox and he will oppose Cleveland's Fausto Carmona (1-0, 3.21 ERA), who seems to have the Sox's number. The first pitch is set for 12:05p CDT and the game will be broadcast on CSN.

TBGR Diary:
No secrets here.... It was the same stuff (good starting pitching and a lack of timely hitting), just seen on a different day.
