Optimism Overflows on Opening Day

Opening Day, April 5, vs. Cleveland

Paul Konerko
Mark Kotsay

Konerko's day gets overshadowed by Buehrle, for obvious reasons, but he had a solid day at the plate, 1-2 with a pair of walks, runs, and RBI.  Kotsay, however, batting 5th was 0-2 (both with RISP) and only had 1 RBI despite coming to the plate with the bases loaded twice.  That won't get the job done!

Short Take:   Buehrle's insane defensive play steals the show as Sox put power, baserunning, pitching, and defense clinics on in 6-0 Opening Day win over Tribe.

It'll be a play you'll talk about forever, like Tadahito Iguchi's crazy vertical putout in 2006 or Alexei Ramirez's no-look back-flip in 2008.  Mark Buehrle, who already etched his name deeper in Sox lore by starting his 8th Opening Day game, took a ball off the shin in the 5th inning, ran down the ricochet in foul territory just shy of 1st base, and flipped the ball between his legs to Paul Konerko's bare hand to put out Lou Marson.  It was symbolic of a perfect day on the South Side, when just about everything went right, as the Sox blanked the Indians 6-0.

Buehrle was brilliant on the mound, going 7 strong innings, and the offense showed the pop and speed that Ozzie Guillen has wanted for years.  Paul Konerko started the year's scoring in the 1st inning launching a 2-run home run just over the wall in right field.  They added 2 more in the 3rd when Mark Kotsay's hustle down the line payed off as a "should have been (and probably was)" double play went down as just a force out at 2nd, scoring Gordon Beckham and allowing Carlos Quentin to score during the next at bat when Marson couldn't find a passed ball from Indian starter Jake Westbrook.

As for the newbies, Opening Day was a mixed bag.  The good?  Alex Rios, who technically isn't a newbie but is still making his Opening Day debut, capped the scoring in the 8th with a solo shot to deep center field and then closed the game officially with a nice diving catch to his left.  Mark Kotsay, also making his Opening Day debut, was DH and batted 5th, but struggled at the plate, twice coming to bat with the bases loaded and grounding into two would-be double plays, though he did leg one out to make up for it.  Mark Teahen and Juan Pierre both were hitless in 7 combined at bats, but J.J. Putz made his Sox debut on the mound, pitching a scoreless 8th inning, allowing just a 2-out single.

The Sox and Tribe will take tomorrow off and return to the Cell Wednesday night, as the pomp and circumstance of Opening Day begin to fade into the daily grind of the 6-month marathon.  Cleveland will send 5-12 with a 6.32 ERA in 2009 (snicker, snicker) while the Sox counter with this guy, maybe you know him, Jake Effing Peavy, 9-6 with a 3.45 ERA last season.  Game time is 7:10 PM and will be broadcast on WGN.

TBGR Diary:
Buehrle's brilliance and Mother Nature's cooperation make for a wonderful Opening Day on the South Side.  Let's just hope this is an omen for things to come.
