Sox Rawked

August 24, at Boston

KW's Daily Special:
Toasted Cuban Sandwich

Sometimes you got to know when to pull the entree out of the oven.

Short Take: Red Sox score 6 unearned runs as White Sox give away another game.

Less than a week after beating Zack Greinke head-to-head, it appears that the Jose Contreras Revival Tour has officially run out of gas.  I'll save you plenty of time, the Sox allowed 6 unearned runs in a disastrous third inning en route to a disheartening 12-8 loss to kick off this crucial road trip.

Don't feel too bad for the Count, as a lot of this was his own doing.  After the Sox spotted him a 4-1 lead, highlighted by a 2-run bomb courtesy of Gordon Beckham in the third, Contreras reverted back to his maddening, inconsistent self.  With the bases loaded and two out and facing David Ortiz, Contreras was able to induce a weak ground ball that Big Roidy couldn't even get to first base.  But just when it looked like he escaped the jam, Contreras slipped as he tried to pick up the ball, allowing Alex Gonzalez to score and open the floodgates.  A bases loaded walk here, a wild pitch there, and the death stroke, a towering 3-run homer by Mike Lowell over the Mon-stah put the Carmines up 7-4 and although the Sox clawed to keep it interesting to the end, everyone knew this one was over.

D.J. Carrasco picked up the pieces (kind of) of Contreras's short start, going 3 innings but allowing another pair of runs to score.  Too bad, since Paul Konerko uncorked a 3-run blast in the 5th inning to chase equally ineffective Clay Buccholz from the game and bring the score to 9-7.  But a 2-out Red Sox rally against Octavio Dotel put this one away.  In typical, frustrating fashion, though, the Sox left the bases loaded in the 7th and a runner at third in the 8th, but couldn't draw any more than a run on a ground out for the final tally of the game.

Look, no one will ever forget Jose for his impressive run through the second half of 2005 and play-offs.  The guy was our rock when we needed it most, and arguably, we don't get that trophy 4 years ago without him being the most dominant pitcher in the American League.  He'll always be a White Sox legend.  But even the best run out of steam and it's hard not to think we've hit that point.  At 5-12 with an ERA north of 5, it's hard to see how he'll ever be an effective starter again.  And its hard to watch a guy who's done so much to get to this level, not once (defecting from Cuba) but twice (returning from last year's Achilles tear) fail so miserably.  But trotting him out there every 5th day as a shell of his former self doesn't respect the guy's legacy, it further tarnishes it.

Meanwhile, out west, the Tigers took care of business in Anaheim, pushing the Sox back 3.5 games off the division lead.  Day 2 on the Road Trip from Hell will be Tuesday when Freddy Garcia takes the hill against Jon Lester from Fenway.  Game time is 6:10 PM Central time and it will be broadcast on Comcast Sports Net.

WSI's Critic's Corner:  0 stars.  Not surprisingly, WSI's critic finds little to love in Boston. For God's sake, these people's claim to culinary fame are baked beans.

Paul Konerko

The Captain's 3-run bomb in the 5th was the highlight offensively.  Unfortunately, he can't pitch, too.
