Great Scott!

August 17, vs. Kansas City

KW's Daily Special:
Fried Armadillo

In honor of Texas native and White Sox hero Scott Podsednik.

Short Take: Scott Podsednik's 8th-inning RBI single wins it for Sox after Linebrink blows 3-run lead an inning earlier.

The Scott Podsednik Revival Tour made another stop on the South Side Monday night, as the veteran lead-off man added to his incredible second-run for the Pale Hose with a game-winning RBI single in the 8th inning to rally the White Sox past the Royals 8-7 and move within 2 games of the division lead.

Mark Buehrle took the hill, still looking for his first win since last month's perfect game and he got off to a rocky start.  After a 1-2-3 first, Buehrle hemorrhaged three runs to the Royals in the 2nd on a 2-out rally.  Mark Teahen doubled to right to break up the no hit bid only 22 outs short of history, before Mitch Maier doubled to left field and Yuniesky Betancourt homered over the Sox bullpen.

Jayson Nix, however pulled the Sox back in the game in the bottom half of the frame, crushing a Brian Bannister offering into the Sox bullpen to cut the deficit to 1.  After Buehrle escaped 1-out bases loaded situation in the 4th by inducing the good ol' 1-2-3 double play from Josh Anderson, the Sox pulled even with the Royals as Scotty Pods' doubled home Alexei Ramirez.  Buehrle, however, coughed up the lead in the 5th on a double by Billy Butler and after a scoreless 6th, his night was over.  His final line was 4 earned runs over 6 innings; not great, but thanks to an Alex Rios RBI double and Alexei Ramirez sac fly, he left in line to finally get that long awaited 12th win of the season.  It looked like a shoe-in in the 7th when A.J. Pierzynski drove a 2-run homer to left field off Bannister to put the Sox up 7-4 and clearly in the driver's seat.  It's the Royals, right?

Hold on, buccarroos, because Scott Linebrink is still working the 8th inning, and after retiring Miguel Olivo and Alberto Callaspo to start the inning, he walked Mark Teahen and Mitch Maier to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of powerful pinch hitter Mike Jacobs and guess what happened?  First pitch, even better!  Jacobs took Linebrink deep to left field and we had a new game, tied at 7 and for the tens of thousands of fans who braved an hour-long rain delay to start tonight's game, it looked like it would be an especially late night at the ol' ballpark.

Luckily, the Royals are still the Royals, and it didn't take them long to blow their comeback.  The Sox manufactured the go-ahead run thanks to a lead-off walk to Rios and a perfect sacrifice by Ramirez.  After Mark Kotsay struck out pinch hitting for Nix, it was up to Mr. World Series Walk-off himself, and Scotty didn't disappoint, lining a sharp single back up the middle that Anderson (thankfully) bobbled in center, allowing Rios to score easily.  Bobby Jenks pitched a flawless 9th inning to secure the Sox's 61st win of the season and Linebrink vultured himself a win despite being easily the least effective pitcher the Sox trotted out there tonight.

The Great 2005 Reunion Tour continues tomorrow night at the Cell when Freddy Garcia takes the hill against Gil Meche.  Same time, (7:11 PM) and same place (Comcast Sports Net) for those of you not making the trek to catch the show.

WSI's Critic's Corner:  4 stars.  This game would have gone down smoothly if not for another Scott Linebrink-related hiccup.
