Only 442 feet? Seriously?

August 8 vs. Cleveland Indians

KW's Daily Special:
In honor of Tomo Ohka's crummy relief pitching...

Short Take:A monster home run by Jim Thome breathes life into the Sox dugout, and the South Siders rally from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Tribe.

Just when it looked like the White Sox might be on their way to a second straight sluggish loss against the lousy Cleveland Indians, slugger Jim Thome turned the momentum around with one swing of his mighty bat.

With the Sox down 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning and Gordon Beckham on first base, Thome launched a 442-foot blast on to the fan deck in deep center field. The 442-foot measurement seemed conservative to the 35,000-plus fans at U.S. Cellular Field Saturday night, but in any case, the booming drive sparked the Sox to an 8-5 come-from-behind victory.

After Thome's shot made it 5-3, the Sox kept the pressure on against Cleveland reliever Tomo Ohka. Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski hit back-to-back singles to set the table for Carlos Quentin, who rifled one into the right-center gap for a two-run double that tied the score at 5-5.

The Sox took the lead for good in the sixth with some excellent execution against Indians reliever Jess Todd (0-1). Dewayne Wise doubled to start the inning. He advanced to third on a grounder by Scott Podsednik and scored on a sacrifice fly by Beckham. Get 'em on, get 'em over, get 'em in -- 6-5 Sox.

The Sox added single insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Chris Getz had an RBI single in the seventh and Podsednik scored on an error in the eighth.

With the comeback, the Sox overcame a shaky start by Carlos Torres. The rookie right-hander lasted only 3 1/3 innings. He walked six and allowed four runs on four hits. Fortunately, the Sox bullpen allowed just one run over the final 5 2/3 innings. D.J. Carrasco (4-1) proved to be the pitching hero, as he tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings and shut the Indians down after the Sox had rallied to tie and take the lead.

The South Siders improved to 6-3 on the current 10-game homestand and moved within two games of first-place Detroit. The Sox will look for the series win Sunday afternoon and will send Jose Contreras (4-10, 4.95 ERA) to the bump. He will be opposed by Cleveland left-hander David Huff (5-6, 6.81 ERA).

Critic's Corner:
D.J. Carrasco is the unsung hero on this roster. Another terrific performance tonight. Five stars for him.
