Sox Open 2nd Half With a Bang!

July 17 vs. Baltimore

KW's Daily Special:
Seven Course Meal
One course for every Thome RBI tonight

Short Take:  Jim Thome leads the White Sox to victory with two monster homeruns and 7 RBI as the Sox inch closer to Detroit in the AL Central

The White Sox opened up the 2nd half of the 2009 campaign in grand style with an offensive explosion on Friday night at the Cell. Jim Thome lead the charge with a career high 7 runs batted in, including a three-run homer and a grand slam, as the Sox whipped the Orioles by a score of 12-8 and moved to within 2.5 games of AL Central-leading Tigers

The Sox opened the scoring in the 2nd when Paul Konerko hit his 17th homer of the season off struggling Baltimore starter Jason Berken, giving the Good Guys a 1-0 lead. In the 3rd, Baltimore charged back as Brian Roberts singled and then scored on a Nick Markakis homer off Sox lefty John Danks. The Sox answered in the bottom half of the third, as Gordon Beckham scored on a sac fly by the Cuban Missile to tie the game 2-2. Moments later, Jermaine Dye doubled to leftfield to score Scotty Pods to give the Sox a-3-2 lead.

The see-saw affair continued to the 4th as slap-hitting Cesar Izturis doubled home Melvin Mora to tie the game at three. However, the Sox would once again take the lead in the 5th. After walks to both Pods (who would go 5-for-5 on the night) and Dye, Jim Thome would connect on the first of his two homers on the evening, this one a three-run bomb into the right field bleachers, giving the Pale Hose a 6-3 lead. Baltimore wouldn’t stay down long, though, as Brian Roberts doubled in the 6th and then scored on All-Star Adam Jones’ 13th homer of the season, narrowing the Sox lead to 6-5.

Jim Thome would strike again, this time in the bottom of the 6th. After walks to Pods and Alexei, Jermaine Dye was hit in the shoulder with a Matt Albers pitch. With the bases loaded, Big Jim blasted his second homer of the night and 16th of the season to give the Sox an 10-5 lead. Yes. Hell Yes.

The Sox tacked on some insurance off former Flubs misfit Rich Hill in the 7th. Chris Getz walked and then scored on Bacon Beckham’s double to left. After moving to 3rd, Gordon would score on Alexei Ramirez’ second sac fly of the night. Sox 12, Orioles 5.

The Orioles would score three garbage time runs in the top of the 8th off a rusty Sox bullpen. Adam Jones knocked in Roberts and Markakis with a two-run single and then scored on an Aubrey Huff double. Newly acquired Tony Pena would come in to record the final three outs and end the scoring, as the Sox won the game by a final score of 12-8. Credit Johnny Danks with the victory (8-6),while Jason Berken was tagged with the loss (1-7).

The Sox go for the series win today at 3:05 at the Cell. It’s All-Star lefty Mark Buehrle (9-3) vs. Cy Bergesen (6-3). Let’s get him this time! Go Sox!

Critic's Corner:
The Sox continue to beat the teams they have to beat before embarking on the difficult part of the 2nd half schedule.
