No Fireworks, Just a Dud on Independence Day

July 4th vs. the Kansas City Royals

KW's Daily Special:
A Dull Holiday Picnic
The White Sox lose their focus and the ballgame, 6-4 against the Royals.

Short Take:Somebody remind Alexei that it takes a while to get to second from left field.

Independence Day at Kenny's Burger Joint's carryout service in Kansas City was an occasion for relaxation. At least for the White Sox it was, as minds seemed to wander on the field today allowing the Kansas City Royals to beat the Sox 6-4.

Gavin Floyd started the game but threw a lot of pitches as he tried to find the strike zone. Maybe it was too much potato salad at Kenny's July 4th picnic that made his fastball float high and wide. But he held on through 5-1/3 innings until a picnic-softball mistake gave the Royals an extra out in the 6th.

The Sox did score first in the 2nd inning. Chris Getz was hit by a pitch from KC starter Luke Hochevar. White Sox wonderboy Gordon Beckham singled, sending Getz to 3rd, but Beckham was thrown out at 2nd as he tried to take advantage of the throw to third. Even phenoms make mistakes on the basepaths. But Dewayne Wise singled Getz home, putting the Sox out in front 1-0 in the 2nd inning.

The Sox 3rd looked good too as Alexei Ramirez led off with a double, followed by Jermaine Dye's 19th home run. A couple more RBIs for Dye and a Sox lead of 3-0 after 3 innings.

Floyd was cruising awkwardly until the Royals' 5th, when Mike Jacobs' single was followed by an RBI triple by Alberto Callaspo. Mitch Maier came up with a sacrifice fly later in the inning, making the score 3-2 Sox after 5 innings.

In the Sox 6th, everybody's fav, Gordon Beckham, knocked a solo homer to put the Sox up 4-2 in the middle of the 6th. But it was in the bottom of the 6th that holiday-picnic carelessness put the Sox in the hole. Willie Bloomquist led off the Royals' 6th with a single, followed by a walk to Billy Butler. The potato salad was increasingly getting to Gavin Floyd as he had trouble throwing strikes. Jose Guillen came to bat, hitting a classic double-play ball to Getz, but Alexei Ramirez was playing too deep to get to second base in time and though they got the force at second, Ramirez couldn't get a good enough throw to first to turn the DP.

Mark Teahen then singled, scoring Bloomquist from third. Matt Thornton then came in and got a groundout, which should've been the 3rd out, but then gave up a 2-RBI single to Callaspo. 5-4 Royals after 6 innings. Bah.

In the Royals' 8th, Brayan Pena hit a solo homer off Octavio Dotel. Now it's 6-4 Kansas City and the White Sox looked groggier and groggier as that July 4th picnic food blurred their judgement.

Not much else to say as the Sox went down meekly in the last 3 innings, breaking their winning streak at 7 games. But tomorrow the holiday is over, the rich food is put away, and the White Sox can concentrate on starting a new winning streak in the last game of this series.

Happy 4th of July anyway, Sox fans. Shhhhhhhh-Boom!

WSI's
Critic's Corner:
Winning streaks have to end sometime. Let's start a new one tomorrow.
