Sox Steal Cubs Pride, 6-0!

June 28 vs. Chicago Cubs

Short Take:   Danks was outstanding this afternoon on the South Side, paving the team's way to victory.

It was an absolutely perfect afternoon for baseball on the South Side. The endless ceiling of blue above was just as appealing to the Sox as playing the Chicago team who wears the same color uniform, as it wasn't much of a contest. John Danks opposed Carlos Zambrano and Danks had much more command and control this afternoon than his north side counterpart, as he only surrendered four hits on the afternoon. This one was all White Sox, 6-0!

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third, as good pitching won out early on, but things changed. With one out, Scott Podsednik was hit by a Zambrano pitch (Zambrano wild... Who knew?!), setting the stage for Alexei Ramirez. The Stick redeemed himself a little bit from the awful week he's had in the field when he hit a two-run shot to left center, putting the Sox up early, 2-0. As it would turn out, that was all the Sox really needed, but since the runs and hits were coming easy, they decided to tack on four more throughout the course of the afternoon.

An inning later, the Sox added one of those four additional tallies. A.J. Pierzynski led off with a single and went to third on Gordon Beckham's base hit with one out. Dewayne Wise reached on an infield single, scoring Captain Chaos to give the Sox a 3-0 lead.

The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Sox added a couple more tallies in the run column. Chris Getz led off the inning with a double to deep right and Gordon Beckham sacrified him over to third. Chris Getz then did something we haven't seen on the South Side in a long time, and something that doesn't happen all that often in Major League Baseball... he stole home! It was now 4-0 and the Sox were looking for even more. Dewayne Wise was hit by a pitch, then stole second, and that was followed by a Scott Podsednik walk. Piniella had seen enough and went to get Zambrano in favor of David Patton. He surrendered a single to The Stick, loading the bases. On what was an odd play, due to the Infield Fly rule being called prematurely, Jermaine Dye popped out to short, but Wise scored and gave the Sox a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Sox added one more run in the home half of the eighth. With Kevin Hart on the mound, Jermaine Dye's solo shot to center with two outs capped the scoring at six, and Scott Linebrink's two solid innings in relief not only sealed the deal for the Cubs, but helped earn John Danks his sixth win of the season. Sox win 6-0!

After this afternoon's victory and fourth series win in a row, the Sox boarded their charter to Cleveland, where they'll begin a three game series tomorrow night. They'll be in search of a very important victory, one which will lead them to the coveeted .500 mark for the first time in a long time! Gavin Floyd (5-5, 4.45) will pitch for the Sox against Carl Pavano (6-6, 5.80). The first pitch is set for 6:05p CDT at Progressive Field and the game will be broadcast on CSN.

Critic's Corner:
Four stars- Seven shutout innings for Danks, timely hitting, and a good two innings of relief. Can't ask for much more!
