Masterful Mark Leads Sox to Victory

June 21 at Cincinnati Reds

KW's Daily Special:
Filet Mignon
Excellent starting pitching led the way to a victory!

Short Take:   Mark Buehrle was sharp as a tack this afternoon, earning his first victory in over a month!

This afternoon's contest was the rubber game of the weekend series and it was a beautiful afternoon for baseball. After the Sox took last night's contest in come-from-behind fashion, Mark Buehrle was going to the mound for the South Siders this afternoon and he was outstanding. He went seven shutout innings, only giving up five hits, and struck out three. This, combined with the offense getting to Aaron Harang early, was the perfect combination for this afternoon's 4-1 White Sox winner at the Great American Ballpark.

Scott Podsednik led off the game with a single after battling Aaron Harang for the perfect pitch. Alexei Ramirez continued his hot hitting, as well, with a single of his own, moving Pods to second. A.J. Pierzynski's base hit to center, plated Podsednik and moved Ramirez to third, giving the Sox a 1-0 lead. Paul Konerko followed with a 6-4-3 double play, but the second run of the inning came in on the play.

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth when the Sox plated another run. Scott Podsednik continued to boost his average by reaching on an infield single. Alexei Ramirez line out to center, then Pods advanced to second on A.J.Pierzynski's ground out to third. Paul Konerko's single to center yielded his 1000th career RBI in the form of Scott Podsednik and the Sox were up 3-0.

Buehrle was dominant this afternoon and was well on his way to his seventh win of the season, and first since May 19. After seven innings of scoreless baseball, he was relieved by Scott Linebrink, who has been shaky as of late. Chris Dickerson pinch hit for Willy Taveras and singled off Linebrink, then stole second. Jerry Hairston, Jr. walked and Dickerson went to third on a wild pitch from Linebrink. It looked like the wheels were going to come off this one again, as Brandon Phillips followed with a sacrifice fly RBI to left. It was a 3-1 game, but Linebrink came through after the lone Reds run crossed the plate, thanks especially to the defense behind him, but not before he hit Jonny Gomes with a pitch. Linebrink got Ramon Hernandez to line out to Ramirez, who fired over to second, doubling Hairston, Jr. off the bag.

The Sox added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Chris Getz led off the inning with a ground out to second, but Gordon Beckham followed with a walk. Dewayne Wise doubled to deep center, scoring Beckham all the way from first with the fourth run on the afternoon for the Sox. Bobby Jenks worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth for his 17th save of the season. Sox win 4-1 and finished their shortened eight game road trip with a 5-3 record!

After another solid road trip, the Sox moved to within three games of that coveted .500 mark. Tomorrow is an off day for the South Siders, but open a six game homestand on Tuesday night against the L.A. Dodgers. John Danks (5-5, 4.48) will take the mound for the Sox, and the Dodgers will send Hiroki Kuroda (1-3, 3.86) to the hill. The first pitch is set for 7:11p CDT at U.S. Cellular Field and the game will be broadcast on CSN.

Critic's Corner:
The starting pitching was awesome, as were the timely hitting and bullpen.
