Simple and Sweet

May 23 vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates

KW's Daily Special:
Tasty Pitching and Timely Hitting
Clayton Richard's eight strikeouts led the way as the Sox beat the Pirates 4-0 on fireworks night.

Short Take:Sox finding that shutouts can work the other way, too.

Sometimes on a pleasant summer evening a light meal is what's called for. Kenny's Burger Joint aims to please and assigned rookie chef Clayton Richard to serve up a low-calorie but highly satisfying meal tonight, as the White Sox defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 behind Richard's masterful pitching. In an 8-strikeout performance, Richard showed command of his pitches through six innings. It's good to get some youth and energy behind the griddle in Kenny's kitchen.

Head Chef Ozzie Guillen was away tonight, leaving Joey Cora in command of the kitchen. All Joey had to do was wind up Clayton Richard and put him out there. The rest took care of itself. Pirate starter Ross Ohlendorf gave a heroic effort, pitching 7-2/3 innings with no run support.

The game was unremarkable until the 3rd inning, when the Sox threatened to score. A.J. Pierzynski doubled hard off the centerfield wall, but was thrown out at third by Pirate firstbaseman Adam LaRoche when Josh Fields grounded sharply to first for a fielder's choice. Scott Podsednik walked, putting Fields at second, but Alexei Ramirez grounded out to end the threat.

In the Sox 4th inning, Jermaine Dye hit a hard grounder that was thrown wild to first by Pirate shortstop Jack Wilson, allowing Dye to reach 2nd base. Paul Konerko, one of the most reliable members of Kenny's waitstaff, rapped a single, scoring Dye and making it 1-0 Sox.

The Sox 5th was dramatic as Chris Getz got a single that caromed off Adam LaRoche's glove at first. Alexei Ramirez came to bat later that inning and does what he does so well, hitting a rifle-shot home run into the left-field seats, putting the Sox up 3-0.

As all these innings proceeded, Clayton Richard just kept putting away the Pirate batters. He racked up 8 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. It was clear in the 6th that Richard was near the bottom of his well, as he gave up a double to Freddie Sanchez and a walk to Craig Monroe. But with another strikeout and some well-placed pitches he got through the 6th without yielding a run.

Octavio Dotel started the 7th with a leadoff walk and had a hard time finding the strike zone. Matt Thornton came in with 2 outs and got Nyjer Morgan on three-pitch strikeout to end the inning. Thornton cruised through the Pirates' 8th with 2 more strikeouts and a pop fly. Still 3-0 for the keepers of Kenny's kitchen.

In the Sox 8th, Jermaine Dye whacked a towering fly ball into the left-field seats for a solo homer. After giving up a walk to Jim Thome, Ohlendorf was finally taken out. Evan Meek came in and got Paul Konerko to fly out to end the inning with the score 4-0 Sox.

Scott Linebrink came in the 9th, and though he gave up a 2-out single to Andy LaRoche, he closed Kenny's kitchen by striking out pinch-hitter Brandon Moss. Tonight there was no need to bring in Kenny's head bouncer Bobby Jenks. Linebrink announced last call and the bar was closed.

All in all, a light meal with a delicate flavor. Kenny's Joint can do more than thick burgers, you know.

Critic's Corner:
Good pitching, good hitting, good evening.
