Man Does Not Live on Pitching Alone

May 16th vs. the Toronto Blue Jays

KW's Daily Special:
Two Hours Later You're Hungry Again
The White Sox can only manage one run on a throwing error, losing to Toronto 2-1.

Short Take: Y'gotta hit, boys. Simple as that.

It was a Saturday lunch menu at Kenny's Burger Joint on May 16th. A light lunch at that, with the White Sox wasting good pitching through 7 innings but scoring only once in a tough 2-1 loss to the patient Toronto Blue Jays.

Bartolo Colon started the day in Kenny's kitchen, looking effective through 5 innings. Master Chef Ozzie Guillen, not wanting to overwork his (sometimes) talented senior chef, replaced him in the 6th with Octavio Dotel. Colon gave up 5 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts while he was there, scattering the baserunners like parsley on buttered potatoes.

Preferring to serve only delicate portions as has been the pattern this season in Kenny's Joint, the Sox lone run came in the 1st inning. Feeling the need for speed, Scott Podsednik drew a leadoff walk from Blue Jay starter Robert Ray. Advancing to second on a groundout to the right side by Chris Getz, Podsednik stole third during Jermaine Dye's at-bat. But Blue Jay catcher Raul Chavez's throw skipped down the third base line, allowing Scotty to go skipping home on the errant throw.

And that, Sox fans, is the sum of today's offense.

The Blue Jays' bats were uncharacteristically unproductive through the first 7 innings, scattering 8 hits against Colon, Dotel, and Matt Thornton. Matt Thornton gave a clinic on pitching under pressure in the 7th, striking out Lyle Overbay then giving up a single to Raul Chavez. Thornton then struck out pinch-hitter Kevin Millar, but gave up another single to the next hitter, Marco Scutaro. With the Toronto crowd stirred from their previous languor, Thornton stared down Aaron Hill to get the third strikeout of the inning and get out of the jam with the Sox still leading 1-0. Matt knows how to use those hot, 97-mph spices to the recipe's best advantage.

The White Sox hitters continued through the rest of the game looking apologetic as they hit weakly on the ground or in the air. Head Chef Ozzie has been trying to get the kitchen staff to use more varied spices, but alas, the menu at Kenny's Burger Joint remains as bland as a hospital cafeteria.

In the Toronto 8th, Scott Linebrink came in to perform his usual job of wheeling out the dessert cart before Head Bouncer Bobby Jenks is brought in the game. But a 1-run lead in Toronto is a thin gruel, and the Blue Jays' hitters found items on the menu that went down easy. Vernon Wells got a 1-out single and promptly stole second base. Adam Lind followed with an RBI double that tied the score at 1. A wild pitch by Linebrink sent Lind to third, and Jose Bautista rapped a single that scored Lind and put the Jays in front 2-1.

There was no need for Head Bouncer Jenks, as the White Sox went down quietly in the top of the 9th, losing 2-1. It bears repeating that even in a place like Kenny's Burger Joint a balanced diet is always best. Good pitching with no hitting is kind of like serving only macaroni and cheese -- soon you get hungry for something more interesting. Here's hoping Kenny's kitchen expands its library of cookbooks soon.

Critic's Corner:
Like the Lottery commercials say, you can't win if you don't play.
