Who says solo HRs are a bad thing?

April 29 vs. Seattle Mariners

KW's Daily Special:
The Sox muscled up and hit three long balls today.

Short Take:Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye club back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to lift the Sox to a matinee victory over Seattle.

Just when you thought the Sox were on their way to another frustrating Corpseball loss, the bats broke out of their slumber in the late innings Wednesday afternoon. After falling into an early 3-1 hole, the South Siders battled back for a satisfying 6-3 win over the first-place Seattle Mariners, taking the rubber match of the three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field.

The weapon of choice? That dastardly solo home run that so many people love to complain about. The Sox clubbed three such blasts on the afternoon, none bigger than a tiebreaking opposite-field shot off the bat of Carlos Quentin in the seventh inning. Jermaine Dye backed him up with yet another solo home run, which gave the Sox a 5-3 edge.

Speed and small ball? HA! Who needs it?

Slumping Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski came into today's game with a .220 batting average and a measly two RBIs to his credit. But A.J. took out some frustration today as he cranked out a solo home run in the second inning off Seattle lefty Erik Bedard. It was the 100th home run of A.J.'s career. Pierzynski also nabbed his first basestealer of the season, throwing out Adrian Beltre as part of a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play that ended the top of the seventh inning.

For the second consecutive outing, Sox starter Gavin Floyd had fans reaching for the antacid. He allowed 12 baserunners over six innings and was consistently behind in counts. But unlike last Friday's 14-0 disaster against Toronto, he made enough good pitches to get out of jams and keep the damage to a minimum. The Mariners scored three runs in the fifth to go ahead 3-1, but the Sox erased that deficit with two runs in the sixth, setting up the game-winning fireworks in the seventh.

Matt Thornton, Scott Linebrink and Bobby Jenks all worked a scoreless inning of relief, with Thornton earning his first victory of the year and Jenks his fifth save.

The Sox completed a rollercoaster homestand with a 3-3 mark. Next up, a five-game road trip to Texas and Kansas City. Mark Buehrle will go to the mound for the South Siders on Friday night in Texas. "Polished workhorse" Brandon McCarthy gets the ball for the Rangers.

Critic's Corner:
Four stars. The Sox were sleepwalking early, but they rallied for a solid win and a series victory.
