Chilly Banana Split

April 28 vs. Seattle Mariners

KW's Daily Special:
XL Banana Split
Tastes so good at first, but it has its revenge on your body in the end.

Short Take:Palehose split a double-dip on a chilly day at Comiskey Park.

Mother Nature always seems to get her kicks in on our Sox. Whenever they return home, it always seems to go from gorgeous to just plain crappy. And so, Monday's game against the Seattle Mariners was PPD until this afternoon, meaning our Sox had to play two games today for the first time since sweeping Detroit in that glorious double-header last September. The first game was a gem (2-1 Sox win), and the second was a forgettable affair (9-1 Sox loss); but, at least those with tickets to the nightcap were treated to 18 innings of baseball for the price of 9.

In the first game, Bartolo Colon burned a ton of fat off his body in just a matter of moments--he amassed over 40 pitches in the 3rd inning. In the 4th, our Sox stacked together just enough hits to eke out a pair of runs on a Paul Konerko 2-bagger to get in both Josh Fields and TCQ. Colon and Co. kept chugging along until they hit a minor speed bump in the 7th, when Seattle scored their lone run (Russell Branyan). Colon fortunately minimized the damage, leaving runners on base. Matt Thornton and Bobby Jenks provided scoreless relief in the 8th and 9th innings to close the first game out for the Good Guys.

In the nightcap, John had absolutely nothing in the Dank(s), lasting only four innings! The major blow came in the top of the 2nd with the M's already leading by 1 when Yuniesky Betancourt knocked in 3 with a single swing into the seats. The relief of DJ Carrasco and Lance Broadway weren't much better, as they each surrendered a pair of runs. The M's only were held off the scoreboard in the 3rd, 5th, and 9th innings. With most of the 25,000 and change already leaving the premises, our Sox finally got on the board--on the 2nd to last play of the game. Konerko singled in Fields. Whoop ti do.

One win is better than surrendering both games, so there's something to be positive about the events that happened at the chilly Comiskey Park on this, the 28th day of April. Let's look to take the rubber match of the series tomorrow. The game's at 1:05 and can be viewed on WGN. 3 games in 24 hours? Yeesh! Our guys will have earned that day off on Thursday after that game is done (be sure to tune into CSN on that off day anyways, as the Blackhawks begin Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at 8 pm)!

Critic's Corner:
1 star goes out to the pitching performance from Colon in Game 1.
