White Sox Walk All Over Rays Pitching

April 18 at Tampa Bay

KW's Daily Special:
A Perfect Blend of Spices
Sox take advantage of an off night for Rays pitching, mixing the offense into a tasty stew.

Short Take:The Sox get on base with a gang of walks and get an 8-3 win with a gaggle of hits.

It's another Saturday night at Kenny's Burger Joint, where the carryout menu has been carried out to Tampa Bay. Head Chef Ozzie Guillen hasn't liked the blend of ingredients so far this season: too much weak-hitting broth and not enough pepper. But tonight the kitchen staff came through as Tampa Bay's Scott Kazmir was in a giving mood, yielding six walks and five timely White Sox hits. Master Chef Mark Buehrle did what he always does, coming through with a strong performance for 6-2/3 innings.

The Sox first inning looked to be a rich appetizer as Kazmir loaded the bases on walks to Brent Lillibridge, Josh Fields, and (The) Carlos Quentin. But Jermaine Dye grounded into a double play, getting no RBI and taking the air out of the Sox offense like a fallen souffle'. Paul Konerko came through with a double, scoring Fields, and the Sox ended the inning with two runs.

The Sox scored again in the 4th on a walk (Kazmir's fifth) to Brian Anderson and a double by Corky Miller. But the flaming entree was brought out in the 5th when T. Carlos Quentin led off with a no-doubt-about-it homer, followed by Kazmir's sixth walk to Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko's 2-run homer. Kazmir left the game at that point, no doubt to wash dishes instead of trying to cook. J. P. Howell was brought in to clean up Kazmir's mess.

The Rays got hungry in their half of the 5th, scoring two runs on a string of singles and speed. In the 6th, the Sox faced Grant Balfour, who promptly gave up walks to Miller and Lillibridge. Josh Fields tried a sacrifice bunt, but Corky Miller was forced at third. Carlos the Q was back again, this time with an infield single that led to an bases-loaded Ozzieball exhibition: Dye popped a fly into short right that was caught by Akinori Iwamura -- Lillibridge tagged up and flew home just ahead of Iwamura's wild throw, making it a 7-2 lead for the Sox. By the 7th, Buehrle had thrown over 100 pitches. After giving up a 2-out single to Carl Crawford, Ozzie brought in Octavio Dotel, who annoyingly gave up a walk to Evan Longoria and an RBI single to Carlos Pena. But hey, not everybody knows how to cook.

The Sox entered the 8th with a 7-3 lead and added another run after a couple more walks and an RBI Baltimore-chop hit by the head waiter from Kenny's Burger Joint, Carlos Quentin. Scott Linebrink pitched the 8th, giving up a single but no runs. Tampa Bay came into the bottom of their 9th still hungry after seeing the White Sox feast on eight runs. Carl Crawford got a cheap, bad-hop hit off Kenny's bartender, D. J. Carrasco. But Carrasco told the Rays that they'd had enough -- he cut them off with strikeouts to Longoria and Pena to end the game. The dining room will be open again on Sunday as the Sox shoot to dominate this series.

Critic's Corner:
Everybody likes Kenny's menu: drawing walks, getting timely hits, and watching Buehrle be Buehrle.
