Gavin deserved better

April 8 vs. Kansas City Royals

KW's Daily Special:
You'll go home starved, just like the Sox hitters

Short Take:   The Sox offense manages just three singles, wasting a good performance by Gavin Floyd and the bullpen.

Most of the time, seven innings of two-run ball is good enough to get a starting pitcher a victory. Well, that didn't work out so well for Gavin Floyd on Wednesday as the Sox suffered their first loss of the season, 2-0 to the Kansas City Royals.

The White Sox lifeless bats managed just three singles off Kansas City starter Zack Greinke and two Royals relievers. The offense was so bad, in fact, that Jermaine Dye's single to center field was named "The Drive of the Game"on the WGN broadcast. The Sox had just one good scoring opportunity, that coming in the second inning. Jim Thome worked a leadoff walk and Dye followed with a single to right, placing runners on first and second with no outs. The threat went to hell quickly, though, when Paul Konerko bounced into a double play and A.J. Pierzynski grounded weakly to first.

The one bright spot was Floyd's performance. He struck out nine, allowed only six hits and walked just two. Matt Thornton and Scott Linebrink each worked a scoreless inning in relief. Linebrink put his poor spring training behind him by striking out the side in impressive fashion. However, a three-hit performance by the offense just ain't gonna get it done. The Sox will try to get the series win Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. John Danks takes the mound for the good guys. Kyle Davies will pitch for Kansas City.

Critic's Corner:
The Sox get two stars, one for Gavin Floyd and one for Scott Linebrink. To hell with the hitters tonight.
