162 Just Isn't Enough!

September 29 vs. Detroit Tigers

Sox Magic Number:
Sox have a real magic number for the first time in four days. It is simple now: Win and you are In.

Short Take:   Sox-Twins can't be decided after a full season.

The Tigers had dreams of going on vacation this fine Monday but the two Ship of Fools atop the AL Central put a stop to that. With a Sox win yesterday, the Tigers had to board the bus to Chicago to makeup game they couldn't care less about. September 13 was a weekend that saw games cancelled both that Saturday AND the Friday before. Only a half game difference between the Sox and Twins would force it to be made up and lo, fate has shined uponst thee. And as an added bonus, this afternoon's game was delayed three hours as well. For teh Tigers, it really couldn'tget any worse...or could it?

The Sox faced off against their old teammate, Freddy Garcia. Garcia was traded to the Phillies after 2006 in exchange for Floyd, the man hitting the rubber for the Sox. Garcia pitched in just 11 games in 2007 before injuries took over and was released by Philedelphia. The Tigers took a chance on him and here he is, wishing he was sleeping on a giant pile of money but instead is tossing the ball on a raining afternoon. Garcia started slowly as he walked the first two batters. Dye singled in Cabrera and the Sox were off to a 1-0 lead. He pitched well but got no run support until the 5th when Inge doubled in Raburn to tie the game. Floyd was in trouble with runners on the corners and no outs. He struck out the next two and Sheffield grounded out to end the inning. Floyd got into more trouble in the 6th when his own two out throwing error allowed Cabrera to score and Detroit to take the lead, 2-1. The Sox answered in the bottom of the sixth in a big way...

Tiger pitching threw three wild pitches in the inning. One advanced Wise to second, the next brought him home as Dye walked and yet another wild pitch moved Dye into second. Sox had the go-ahead run in scoring position with nobody out. Thome went down swinging and Konerko was intentionally walked to bring up the lefty Griffey. Four straight balls loaded them up for Ramirez. The TIgers switch pitchers but it was no matter as Ramirez took the first pitch he saw deep into left for his fourth grand sam of the season. It marked the most grand slams ever hit by a rookie in MLB history and also set a franchise record with 12 slams in a season. It was also the second game in a row agasint the Tigers where they gave up the big one. Sox go up 6-2 and Floyd is done. He finishes with another quality start, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 8 K. The Tigers never really threatened again as they only got one baserunner to second. Pierzynski doubles in Ramirez and scores on an error in the 8th to give the Sox a couple insurance runs. The pen does its job: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB and 5 K. A sign of things to come? Sox force the Twins to fly to Chicago with a 8-2 victory. Game 163 is for all the marbles and starts at 6:30 on Tuesday. Winner plays Tampa Bay on Thursday, the loser eats their hats and get booed.
