Vazquez Shines on a Rainy Day

September 14 (DH Game 1) vs. Detroit

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

Vazquez looks like an Ace today

Short Take: † Sox beat Detroit and reduce their magic number to 14

After what seemed like 40 days and 40 nights of rain, the Sox finally took the field at the Cell on Sunday afternoon to defend their first-place lead in the AL Central and battle the Detroit Tigers. After being rained out Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and then having the Sunday 1:05pm start-time moved back to 4pm, Javier Vazquez took the mound for the White Sox and dominated the Tigers in a 4-2 win. The victory increases the Sox AL Central lead over Minnesota to one full game while reducing the magic number to 14. With a two-game lead in the loss column over the Twins and 15 games left to play, things look good for the Pale Hose.

Vazquez was outstanding on the day, pitching a solid 7.2 innings, striking out eight (including his career 2000th strikeout), walking only two and scattering three hits. Vazquez only let a runner past first base on one occasion, in the 4th inning, when Placido Polanco led off with a double and advanced to third on a Miguel Cabrera groundout. Matt Joyce walked before Gary Sheffield lined-out hard to Juan Uribe to end the inning. The only other hits Javy allowed were a two-out single by Magglio Ordonez in the 1st and a 7th inning pop-up that dropped in front of Juan Uribe. In any other inning with men on base, it would have been an infield-fly automatic out. With nobody on, Joyce rounded first too far and was tagged out after Uribe fired a missile to the Cuban Missile on a heads-up play. Matt Thornton relieved Javy in the 8th after a two-out walk Dusty Ryan, and Thornton quickly struck out Curtis Granderson to retire the side.

The Sox got on the board in the 5th when Ken Griffey Jr doubled to center and scored on a clutch two-out single by Juan Uribe. In the 7th, TCM Alexei Ramirez took Justin Verlander deep to give the Sox a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, the Sox worked some two-out magic to give Bobby Jenks some insurance for the 9th. Orlando Cabrera (who made a terrible base running error earlier in the game to get picked off 2nd base) singled to left and then scored on a DeWayne Wise double over Magsí head in RF (should have been scored a triple). Jermaine Dye followed with another double to right to score Wise and give the Sox a 4-0 lead.

The 9th got a bit tense as Bobby Jenks came in for a non-save situation. Sox-killer Placido Polanco led off with a single before Mags hit a bomb over Brian Andersonís head in CF, cutting the Sox lead to 4-2. Alas, thatís all the Kitties could muster. After a one-out walk to Matt Joyce, Jenks got Sheff to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. The Sox notch their 82nd win of the season and increase their AL Central lead to 1.0 game with 15 left. Johnny Danks takes the hill tonight against the Gambler on ESPN. Go for the Sweep!

Quest For the Final Table Update:
† Magic Number is 14, two up in the loss column, 1.0 game lead, 15 to play. This is a pennant race!
