Rays Send Sox to Heartbreak Hotel

August 22 vs Tampa Bay

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

Alexei is the man right now

Short Take:   Sox bullpen looks grosser than a peanut butter and banana sandwich.

In front of 38,747 at US Cellular Field on Elvis Night, the Sox bullpen made a crash landing in a 9-4 loss to the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. Johnny Danks worked hard for 6.1 innings, giving up only three runs, but the Sox offense squandered opportunities all night, leaving eight men on base, five in the first two innings alone. When the bullpen came into the game late, the floodgates opened and the Sox were in the ghetto.

The defeat drops the Sox record to 73-54, and more importantly drops them to 2nd place in the AL Central, ˝ game behind Minnesota (as the Twins lead the LA Angels 9-0 in the top of the 7th at press time). Boston’s defeat of Toronto puts the Carmines ˝ game ahead of the Pale Hose in the tight AL Wild Card race also. Hopefully Toronto won’t be cruel this weekend.

The Sox got the crowd all shook up in the bottom of the 4th when they drew first blood on former Dodgers prospect Edwin Jackson (who incidentally was almost acquired by Kenny Williams in a Magglio Ordonez trade before the 2004 season). Ken Griffey Jr scored on Nick Swisher’s 21st homer of the season (landing in Podsednik WS Game 2 territory), giving the Sox an early 2-0 lead.

Danks kept the Rays offense in check through the first four innings. However, in the fifth, Dioner Navarro scored on an Akinori Iwamura triple to left, cutting the Sox lead to 2-1. In the sixth, Carlos Pena lead off the inning with a solo homer (his 26th) off Danks, tying the game at 2-2. And in the seventh, Navarro reached base on a double and scored on ex-Twinkee Jason Bartlett’s RBI double, giving the Rays a 3-2 lead.

Octavio Dotel was lonesome tonight on the mound, as he blew up in the top of the 8th inning, giving up three runs on nine pitches. Rocco Baldelli lead off the inning with a homer to left (his first since May 3, 2007). Willi Aybar doubled next and was driven in on Ben Zobrist’s 6th dinger of the year, giving the Rays a 6-2 lead.

The Good Guys made a mild comeback in the 8th when Jim Thome battled to draw a walk and then scored on the Cuban Missile’s 15th homer of the year, but that was all the scoring the Sox would do. The Rays tacked on three more runs in the 9th off Horacio Ramirez.

John Danks (10-6) earns the tough loss tonight, while Edwin Jackson (10-8) gets the win. Tonight’s loss is only the 2nd Sox defeat in their last 10 games, but the previous nine games have been against the three worst teams in the American League. Hopefully the Sox can come back and win the series similar to the way they bounced back after their tough Friday loss last week to the A’s. Tomorrow’s game starts at 2:55pm on Fox. Big-game Javy tries to better his pedestrian 10-10 record against Scott Kazmir. Get the next two!

Quest For the Final Table Update:
Tampa Bay's been reading our mail. Return to Sender.
