A Hole in the Sawx; Buehrle Being Buehrle

August 8 vs. Red Sox

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

KW's Hand
Griffey looks terrible so far, but the Sox still might win the World Series.

Short Take:   Red Sox miss Manny’s bat in the lineup while Mark Buehrle delivers a clutch performance for the Pale Hose.

In front of a packed house at the Cell in a playoff-type atmosphere, Mark Buehrle showed his veteran leadership by delivering a huge performance for the White Sox in a 5-3 defeat of the defending World Champions. Buehrle took charge with seven innings of work, eight strikeouts, and only two walks while holding the Carmines to only four hits and an earned run.

As Buehrle kept the Red Sox bats off-balance with his change-up, the White Sox offense came alive and manufactured runs with excellent execution. In the bottom of the third, Juan Uribe and OC reached base on singles before AJ Pierzynski delivered a sac fly to score Uribe, giving the Sox a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the 5th, Swish lead off with a walk, followed by a single by the Cuban Missile. Juan Uribe laid down one of the best executed sac bunts of the season to move the runners into scoring position. OC doubled down the right-field line to score both men and give the Good Guys a 3-0 lead.

In the 7th, OC reached base with a two-out walk before AJ lined a single to right-field. Pierzynski rounded first too far and found himself in a pickle. However, in a heads-up play, AJ stalled the rundown enough to let OC round third and score before AJ was tagged to end the inning. Sox lead 4-0 at that point.

After a leadoff hit by Varitek, Ozzie pulled Buehrle in the top of the 8th to a well-deserved standing ovation. However, the Sox bullpen once again floundered. Octavio Dotel walked JD Drew before yielding a three-run homer to Dustin Pedroia. Thornton and Carrasco finished the inning with some tense moments without yielding any more runs.

With the White Sox lead reduced to 4-3, Carlos Quentin delivered some insurance in the bottom of the 8th with a monster homer, his 31st of the year, into the LF bleachers. Bobby Jenks got the call in the 9th and mowed down the Red Sox bats to earn his 23rd save of the season and help secure Buehrle’s 9th win. The loss goes to Lester (amazing his first loss since May 25th). Big win for the Sox in this possible 2008 playoff preview.

Quest For the Final Table Update:
Sox lead as of press-time is 1.0 game. Need a Royal Flush from KC this weekend against the Twinkees.
