Twins Fans Bad, Bullpen Worse

July 31, at Minnesota

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

KW's Hole Cards:
KW gambles on Griffey, but the Sox sorely needed another arm.  A big gamble by Williams, unless he feels the Sox coaching staff can fix this bullpen and fast.

Short Take: Twins score 7 runs in last 2 innings as Sox drop finale of 4-game series in Minnesota.  Why, oh why, couldn't they just have forfeited?

When it rains, it pours.  Entering the bottom of the 7th inning, the White Sox were clinging to a 4-3 lead and John Danks had been pitching well, but an ejection to Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, a walk to Denard Span, and a 5-minute delay thanks to the rubes the fancy themselves Twins fans, and the White Sox bullpen completed another memorable implosion, allowing 7 runs to score in the final 1 2/3 innings as the Twins pulled again to within a half-game of the White Sox, beating the Sox 10-7.

So, can anybody on this team hold a lead?  Today, we got to watch Matt Thornton allow the tying run to score after he put him in scoring position on a passed ball.  Octavio Dotel then threw gasoline all over the fire, plunking Delmon Young and then allowing a 3-run homer to Jaso Kubel that would ultimately prove to be the decisive blow.  I won't even talk about Boone Logan's outing, let's just say he walked 2, gave up 2 hits, and somehow only gave up an earned run.  But it was bad.

As for Twins fans, they took offense in the 7th, when Span, leading off attempted to bunt and ended up getting hit in the leg.  Memo, to Minnesota: A bunt counts as swing, and if you swing, regardless of whether or not you get hit, that's a strike.  I mean, this is Week 1 of Baseball 101.  I don't even think Joe Morgan has to go over that rule in Baseball For Dummies.  Why don't you guys stick to ice fishing and moose humping, rather than coming to your garbage ballpark and throwing crap all over the field when your idiot of a manger gets himself tossed for crying like a baby?  Danks didn't help anything, however, the Sox could have stepped on the Twins throats in the 7th and squeezed.  Instead, he nibbled against Denard Span, walking him and putting speed on the basepaths in front of Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau.  Gosh, I wonder where I've seen that scenario unfold?  Oh wait, it's happened seemingly every single time we play Minnesota.

On the same day Kenny Williams acquired himself another bat, the Sox showed that what they really needed were arms to bolster their pen.  The line is ugly, Thornton, who was tagged with the loss, Dotel, Wassermann, and Logan pitched a combined 2 innings, allowing 6 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks.  Absolutely terrible.  I understand the Metrodome is a House of Horrors for us, but this is not a power-packed, offensive lineup.

Thankfully, the Sox escape Minnesota with their 1st place lead in tact, but their bullpen hemorhagging runs at a ridiculous rate.  The Sox have a weekend series in Kansas City starting tomorrow, with Javier Vazquez looking to right his ship against Luke Hochevar.  The Twins, meanwhile, get three more games in the Dome against the Indians, who are doing all they can to roll over and play dead until the season ends.  Tomorrow's Sox game will be aired on Comcast Sports Net and starts at 7:10 PM.

Quest For the Final Table Update:
A wasted opportunity, but at least the Sox can leave Minnesota in first place.  After this weekend, the Sox are home for 16 of their next 23 games while Minnesota only has 9 home dates left in August.

Only went 1-4, but his 2-run single in the 5th looked to put square on the path to victory, until Ozzie had to summon the bullpen.
