Danks and Dye Deliver at the Dump; Dotel Disappoints

June 20 at The Urinal

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

Short Take:   Sox bullpen crumbles to give away the first game of the ‘08 Crosstown Series

The White Sox fell to the crosstown Cubs in dramatic fashion this afternoon in front of 41,106 Chicago baseball fans at the Friendly Urinal on the north side. The Cubs fed the Sox some of their own softball-hitting medicine by hitting three late-inning homers to take the lead and eventually win the game. While ending the Sox three-game winning streak, as of press time the loss also withers the Sox AL Central lead to just 4.0 games over the Minnesota Twins.

As good as John Danks was in his start this afternoon, Octavio Dotel was just as bad in relief. Danks gave up a run in the first inning when Kosuke Fukodome reached base on an infield dribbler and eventually scored when D-Lee bounced into an infield-back 6-4-3 double play. After that, Danks settled down and pitched thru the bottom of the sixth inning, only giving up three more hits and not allowing any walks.

The Good Guys got on the board in the top of the 2nd when Jermaine Dye murdered a Ted Lilly floater onto Waveland….actually, it probably made it to Irving Park Road. AJ Pierzynski continued his cub-killing ways in the top of the third when he belted a homer to centerfield, scoring OC and giving the Sox a 3-1 lead.

The Sox had plenty of opportunities to tack-on to the lead. “Dirty .230” Nick Swisher led of the 6th with a double. Juan Urine led off the 7th with a single (pinch-hitting for Danks). Brian Anderson led off the 9th with a double that just missed going out of the park. In all three cases, the Sox couldn’t come up with a timely hit to advance the runners and score some insurance. The Pirates have left town, and you just knew three runs wasn’t going to be enough…

Dotel entered in the 7th and was hit hard by everyone he faced. Back-to-back dingers by D-Lee and A-Ram tied the game at 3-3. After Mark DeRosa lined out hard to rightfield and Matt Murton reached base with a hit, Ozzie went out to slap Dotel around. Thankfully the inning ended when Dotel was able to strikeout Ronny “don’t call me Cesar” Cedeno.

After the Sox couldn’t score BA from 2nd with no outs in the 9th, the momentum shifted to Sweet Lou’s boys. The usually reliable Scott Linebrink offered up Ramirez a center-cut pitch at the knees that was quickly deposited into the centerfield foliage. Cubs win the World Series. Let’s go to Yak-zies. Credit Linebrink (2-2) with the loss, and Dotel gets his second blown save of the year. Kerry Wood (4-1) steals the win.

Contreras takes the hill tomorrow against Marquis at 12:05 on CSN. Hopefully the Pale Hose will call on the spirit of Caruso, Valentin and C-Lee to take the next two and win the series. Go Sox.

Quest For the Final Table Update:
No tables left at Yak-zies. Try Sluggers or Barleycorn. Oh yeah, 4.0 game lead in the AL Central.
