Buehrle & Co. Hit Their Way to Victory

May 17 at San Francisco Giants

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

KW's Hole Cards:
An Ace known as Buehrle
Surrendered hits, but also got one of his own and worked his way out of most jams.

Short Take:   Timely hitting negates the multiple runners stranded on base throughout the game and the bullpen comes through in a key situation, as the Sox take the series against the Giants.

After guaranteeing themselves no worse than a split on this west coast swing with last night's victory, the White Sox looked to ensure themselves a winning roadtrip with tonight's game and they succeeded, thanks to some timely hitting early. The end result was a 3-1 White Sox winner.

Barry Zito, he of the 0-7 record, wasn't too difficult of a puzzle for the Sox to figure out, as they got to him right away in the first. Orlando Cabrera led off the game with a single and Pablo Ozuna moved him over to third with a hit. The Carlos Quentin came through with a sacrifice fly RBI, giving the Sox the early 1-0 lead. Just one inning later, the Sox would again add to their run total. Last night's hero, Alexi Ramirez, reached base on an infield single and went to second on Toby Hall's base hit. Mark Buehrle sacrificed the runners over with an excellent bunt, setting the table for Orlando Cabrera. His fly out to center brought Ramirez home from third and put the Sox up 2-0.

The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth, when the Giants scored off Buehrle. Jose Castillo led off the inning with a double to deep left and went to third on Dan Ortmeier's groundout to second. Castillo dented the plate when Eugenio Velez, who pinch-hit for Zito, grounded one to short and cut the Sox's lead in half with that RBI.

The Sox got that run back a half inning later, thanks to a throwing error by San Fran and a clutch hit by Paul Konerko, who's been slumping something awful as of late. Jermaine Dye singled to center to lead off the inning and went to second on a throwing error by Keiichi Yabu, setting the table for Paulie. Konerko singled up the middle and brought Dye in, giving the Sox their two-run lead back.

Things got interesting in the home half of the seventh. The South Side's former center fielder, Aaron Rowand led off with a double and went to third on Jose Castillo's infield single. Steve Holm hit for Keiichi Yabu and walked, loading the bases for Randy Winn. Ozzie had seen enough from Buehrle and put the game in the hands of Octavio Dotel. Dotel came through huge, getting Randy Winn on strikes, leaving the bases loaded and the score at 3-1 in favor of the Sox. Scott Linebrink pitched a scoreless eighth and Bobby Jenks came in for the ninth and nailed down his 10th save of the season, guaranteeing the Sox a winning west coast roadtrip and a 3-1 victory!

The Sox look to go an impressive 7-3 out west, and for the three game sweep tomorrow at AT&T Park, as John Danks (3-3) will face off against San Francisco's Matt Cain (2-3). The first pitch is set for 3:05 CDT in the City by the Bay and the game will be broadcast on CSN.

Quest For the Final Table Update:
An Ace named Buehrle solidifies a winning west coast swing.
