Sox win in Pac Bell debut

March 31st, from the Associated Press

The Chicago White Sox made the most of their first visit to Pacific Bell Park.

Barry Bonds tosses his bat after striking out.

The White Sox scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 Sunday.

Carlos Lee hit a bases-loaded, two-run single in the first inning off starter Jay Witasick, and Magglio Ordonez scored on Pedro Feliz's error at third.

White Sox starter Jon Garland added an RBI single before the inning was over.

Barry Bonds, who hit a record 73 home runs last season, impressed the crowd in the bottom of the first with a towering hit to deep right-center that bounced into the bleachers for a double. Reggie Sanders' double down the left-field line scored Bonds.

Paul Konerko added an RBI double for the White Sox in the fourth inning, while Juan Melo hit a run-scoring single in the ninth for the Giants.

Witasick, who is not in the Giants' announced starting rotation for the regular season, allowed four runs on four hits over two innings.

White Sox starter Jon Garland allowed one run and three hits over five innings with five strikeouts.

Chicago headed to Seattle after the game for Monday's opener against the Mariners. The Giants have Monday off, then open at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Giants announced Sunday that they decided to open the season without second baseman Jeff Kent as he continues his recovery from a broken left wrist.

Kent was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21, and under baseball rules he is eligible to return April 6.

Kent, a former NL MVP, told reporters he injured his wrist while washing his truck. But later reports said he may have had an accident while riding his motorcycle near the Giants' spring home, Scottsdale Stadium.
