WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Another Pleasant Valley Sunday!

April 20th at Tampa Bay Rays

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

KW's Hole Cards:
Danks and Thome

Big Slick
Ace/King. “Lights-out” John Danks and the suddenly fleet-footed Jim Thome!

Short Take: Sox picked up right where they left off Saturday night---for the first two-thirds of an inning, anyway. After that…not so much! John Danks and Boone Logan combine for nine strikeouts and a White Sox Winner!

It’s no secret that the White Sox are world-class when it comes to promotional events. We have Mullet Night, Elvis Night, Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day, etc. But we’ve never had a multiple promotion day. Today out in Florida, they apparently did. It was “Cotton Candy Hair Day,” “Annoying Cowbell-playing People Day,” and “Doofy Mascot Day.” But when all was said and done, it was also “White Sox Shutout Day.” Final Score: Good Guys 6, Rays 0.

So what happened, you ask? Well, it all started, appropriately enough, in the first. After two outs, Jim Thome got the Sox on the board with a solo shot. Danks got the Rays down in order, including his first strikeout of the day. The second inning passed pretty uneventfully (except for those cowbells!), but in the third, Edwin Jackson, Tampa’s starter, walked Uribe and then walked Swish. An errant throw on ball four allowed Uribe to go to third, and he scored from there on a hit by Thome. Danks struck out the side and after three, it was Sox 2, Rays 0.

The fourth inning also passed pretty uneventfully, but in the fifth, the flop came up Sox. Uribe led off and flied out. Swish worked a walk, Orlando Cabrera reached on an infield hit that sent Swish to second, Thome singled, scoring Swish (RBI #3), Cabrera went to second, then to third on the throw home. Jermaine Dye tripled to the deepest part of the park. It had to be, because it enabled Thome to score FROM FIRST. (Like that happens every day!) Then AJ singled home JD. Rays went down in order in the bottom of the frame and at the turn, it was Sox 6, Rays 0.

And that’s how it ended, but we would be remiss not to acknowledge a terrific effort in relief by Logan. And even though it did no damage, Thome’s double with two outs in the ninth is also worthy of mention. One more at-bat and who knows? He might have hit for the cycle!

Tomorrow, the guys get a much-needed day off, then the mighty Yankees come into town to be taught a much-needed lesson in humility, i.e., our team is the REAL deal!

Quest For the Final Table Update:
Still on top of the deck!
