Crank Up the Machine: Sox Destroy the Rays

April 18 at Tampa Bay

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

Short Take:   Sox score one run for every year of Longoria's new contract.

The White Sox beat the hell out of Tampa Bay on Friday night, laying on an offensive assault reminiscent of some early 2000 or 2005 Sox games. Led by an outstanding start by staff ace Javy Vazquez, the Sox defeated the Rays 9-2 to earn their 10th victory and remain the American League’s best team.

The Sox got on the board in the 3rd after Juan Uribe reached on a Jason Bartlett error and Nick Swisher walked. With two men on, Jim Thome hit a monster homerun to right field, the 511th of his career, to give the Good Guys a 3-0 lead. Paul Konerko, not to be outdone, destroyed Jeff Niemann’s next pitch, driving a homer to left to give the Sox a commanding 4-0 lead.

In the 4th, the Sox manufactured four more runs to take an 8-0 lead. TCQ, Carlos Quentin, reached on an error by third baseman Evan Longoria, who was obviously not mentally prepared to play under the pressure of the completely insane and totally undeserved recently-signed nine-year contract. Quentin scored on a Juan Uribe double. After another walk to Swish, Orlando Cabrera lined a base hit up the middle to score Uribe. After a walk to Thome, the Sox brought another runner home as Pauly took one in the mid-section for the team and earned an RBI HBP. The onslaught was capped off by Cabrera scoring on a Jermaine Dye sacrifice fly.

Vazquez cruised through the young Tampa Bay lineup on his way to earning his third victory of the season. Javy gave up only two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings, along with four strikeouts (albeit a bit low for him) and only one walk. It was another quality start by Vazquez, although it must be noted that he ran into a small speed bump in the dreaded six inning, as the Rays scored two runs.

So, the Sox show some spirit in coming back after last night’s demoralizing loss. The middle of the lineup looks to be heating up a bit with Thome and PK’s nice night, Swish continues to draw walks and get on base, and the starting pitching remains razor sharp. The Sox move their AL Central leading record to 10-6 and look to continue the Tampa Bay beat-down tomorrow night. Mark Buehrle takes the hill at 6:10pm on WGN against some joker with an 8.80 ERA named Sonnanstine. Keep it going.

Quest For the Final Table Update:
Tampa Bay isn't worthy of sitting at the same table as the Good Guys. Fold up that dome and go home.
