WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Another year, another home opener

April 7 vs. Minnesota Twins

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

Gambling on sending the Fields of clubs to the minors paid off when he drew the Crede of diamonds

Short Take:   Sox beat a divisional foe and claim sole possesion of first place at the AL Central table. For pure players only.

Wish the smoldering ruins of the 2007 season long extinguished, the So look to kick off 2008 on a better note. The Sox went 4-2 on their opening road trip and were just coming off a sweep of the highly touted and often bafooning Detroit Tigers. Today's game presented an opportunity to break their tie with the Royals(!) and claim first place in the AL Central.

The old ballpark looked great, as per usual. Most changes were cosmetic (different advertising, no pitch speed display, some new food options, etc.) but the real changes being looked forward to was the product on the field. It looked like trouble was on tap after Vazquez couldn't handle a bunt from Twins leadoff hitter Carlos Gomez. A stolen base and a Joe Mauer single later and it was quickly 1-0. The Sox answered when Swisher doubled, Cabrera advanced him to third and Thome knocked him in. 1-1 after one. The Twins weren't done and added another run in the second to grab a 2-1 lead. The Sox could not answer but held them in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, Los Ozzie decided to throw his bows at one of his favorite umps, Phil Cuzzi. Ozzie took exception to his strike zone and just like that, Ozzie was playing XBox 360 in the clubhouse. The crowd cheered him on, as is their wont.

The fourth saw the Sox and Twins each add another run and a scoreless 5th signaled the end for Twins' starter Nick Blackburn. Javy would remain, the stout burro that he is. He was in the zone and would finish with 7 IP, 3 R on 7 H, 1 BB and 8 K. His performance was etched in stone after the bottom of the 7th. Twins' reliever Matt Guerrier pitched a nice 6th but the wheels came off in the 7th. He got a quick out when Cabrera flied out but a Thome walk and Konerko single put runners at the corners. Pat Neshek came in to stop the Sox rally. Dye singled and Thome scored. He got Pierzynski to strike out but a Quentin single loaded them up for Joe Crede. Neshek hung a 1-0 pitch and Crede dropped it into the Sox bullpen for a go-ahead grand slam! The stadium erupted and the curtain call was made.

Linebrink came in for Vazquez and allowed a run but Jenks came in to close it out in the 9th. Mike Lamb grounded out to Jenks and a Tolbert pinch hit kept the Twins' hopes alive. Too bad Gomez couldn't bet it done like in the first as he hit into a double play, the MLB-leading 12th DP the Sox have turned this season. Cue the POD, cue the fireworks, cue a White Sox winner. 7-4, your final.

WSI's Quest For the Final Table Update:  Winning the pot in the first home game always seems sweeter than not winning at all. Gambling!
