Discussion of the last

September 10 vs Cleveland Indians

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Burned flesh
You eat it last because it sucks.

Short Take:   Pay attention and maybe you'll learn something.

Almost all shoes are made on lasts. There are many types of lasts and they reflect the type of footwear and indeed the feet they are designed for. Different types of footwear require different style lasts. For example, an open-toe sandal will use a different style last from a boot. Lasts were traditionally made of wood but are now normally made from blocks of plastic, milled using CNC machines. Lasts are made from soft materials such as wood and plastic because they need to be able to have small nails (called lasting tacs) hammered into them to hold parts of the shoe in place during manufacture and then removed.

The turned shoe is made inside out with only an outset sole between the foot and the ground. The upper and soles are very flexible. The last is designed in a single size and then a set is made in the range of sizes and widths in which shoes are to be manufactured. Marked sizes will vary slightly from one manufacturer to another. No longer a popular technique.

Many styles of shoes can be made on the same shoe last, but the toe shape and heel height will be the same for each pair made on that shoe last. If you want to have shoes with different toe shapes, then it is necessary to create more than one pair of shoe lasts.

"Hey, I'll bring my lasts with me next season. Keep it up, Sox, and you too can share in my comfy shoes!"

Back to the Grind Update:
The Sox are in last freakin' place.
