A Measley Four Hits Make a Win Impossible

September 1 at Cleveland Indians

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Steak Tar-Tar
Can't play Grinder Ball when the hits are so few & far between.

Short Take: Vazquez's quality start is wasted because his offense was basically inept.

After losing ten road games in a row up to this point, the Sox looked to turn things around in the second game of the three game series tonight in Cleveland.

Javier Vazquez started out strong and things were quiet until the third inning. Kelly Shoppach led off the inning with a single to center and Grady Sizemore walked. Asdrubal Cabrera sacrificed to Vazquez, moving both runners into scoring position. Travis Hafner grounded to second, scoring Shoppach and giving Cleveland an early 1-0 lead.

Just an inning later, the Indians added to their lead. Franklin Gutierrez went deep with one out, and after Kenny Lofton doubled, Casey Blake singled, bringing Lofton around. It was 3-0 Indians, and it only got worse from here.

The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth. The guy who spells his first name wrong, Jhonny Peralta, led off with an infield single. Franklin Gutierrez went down swinging, but Peralta went to second on A.J. Pierzynski's passed ball. Kenny Lofton flied out to right, but with two out, Casey Blake singled to center, bringing around the fourth Cleveland run in Peralta.

Vazquez pitched six solid innings and was even good enough for a quality start with the three earned runs he surrendered. Matt Thornton relieved him and got Sizemore on strikes leading off the inning. Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a double to deep left center, and Travis Hafner carbon copied that, scoring Cabrera and making it a 5-0 ballgame. Ryan Garko, grounded out to third and Peralta popped out to Richar to end the inning.

Ryan Bukvich relieved Thornton in the bottom of the eighth, and I guess he'd feel left out if he didn't give up a run or two, so he did just that. With one out, he walked Kenny Lofton on four pitches. After getting Blake on strikes, Kelly Shoppach drove one deep to left, putting the final nail in the coffin, 7-0.

Byrd was working on a complete game shutout and just for kicks, the Sox decided to make it interesting in the top of the ninth. Juan Uribe hit a one out single to center, as did Jerry Owens, putting runners on first & third. Fitting of the 2007 season, Jim Thome was called out looking, and Paul Konerko was retired on a lazy fly ball to right. Byrd got his shutout and the embarrassment that is the '07 White Sox continued.

After compiling their eleventh road loss in a row, the Sox have fallen to 22 games under .500 and 21 1/2 games out of first! Disgusting. They look to salvage one game in this series tomorrow afternoon at Jacobs Field. The Sox will send Jose Contreras (7-16) to the mound against Cleveland's Jake Westbrook (5-7). The first pitch is scheduled for 12:05p CDT and if you dare to subject yourself to it, the game will be televised on CSN.

Back to the Grind Update:
Grinder Ball? Seems to me that was laid to rest months ago!
