Wild Win!

August 8 vs. Cleveland Indians

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Kobe Beef burger
Fancy stuff by the Sox to stuff C.C.'s face.

Short Take:   Back and fourth they went, but then, Sox come through with the win!

Contreras with a win! Uribe with a clutch hit! C.C. doesn't beat our Sox! Yes, it was a strange night at The Cell on this steamy Wednesday evening. The Sox bats kept fighting and the bullpen continues to record outs to help with a 6-4, 13 inning win.

Jhonny Peralta tagged Jon Garland in the second inning with a solo home run to put the Indians up 1-0. But, the Sox fought back against Big Boy himself, C.C. Sabathia. If you don't know, C.C. has owned us. He's 14-3 against our Sox, and 7-0 when facing them on the South Side. In the third, Toby Hall led off with a double and was brought home on a Josh Fields double to tie the game. Paul Konerko came through with a single to score Fields to make it a 2-1 Sox lead.

Garland wasn't able to hold the Indian's bats in their half of the sixth. With two on and two outs, Jason Michaels and Peralta hit back to back singes to put the Indians back on top 3-2.

The game stayed in the Indians favor until the bottom of the eighth. Red-hot Jermaine Dye killed a Rafael Betancourt offering into the bleachers to tie the game at 3.

The game went into extra innings with the Sox failing to score baserunner Juan Uribe in the ninth, and three runners left on base through the eleventh. That would be costly. With two runners on base, Kenny Lofton popped up to short left to what would be the inning ending out, but Juan Uribe botched the play allowing Lofton to reach safely and allowing Josh Barfield to score to put the Indians on top 4-3.

A.J. Pierzynski (who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the 9th) led off the 12th with a absolute bomb to left field tying the game in extras. While the Sox threatened to win after the home run, Juan Uribe made up for the error in the 13th with a two run homer to set off the fireworks and the faithful fans who stuck around into a walk-off celebration.

The most impressive part of the game is the six innings of relief the bullpen did highlighted by the 1-2-3 ninth Bobby Jenks pitched and the two solid innings Jose Contreras threw. The win puts the Sox at 53-60, 10.5 games out of first. While making a charge for the playoff is ludicrous, it's nice to see the Sox playing better ball. Tomorrow, this three game series against the Indians concludes with Mark Buehrle facing off against Aaron Laffey. Game time is 7:11pm.
