WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

July Baltimore Orioles

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

We've seen this cut of meat before--way too often.

Short Take: And so this gawd-awful, seemingly endless baseball season drags on. If someone ever makes a movie about the 2007 White Sox, a good title would be “When Does Football Season Start?”

We lost. Again. Final score: Orioles 5, Sox 3.

At first, I was really tempted to just take one of my old TBGRs and change the headline. I mean, why the hell not? Those of us who write these things at least are putting in some effort. It’d be nice to see our team do the same for, oh I don’t know, a couple of games in a row? Anyway, just for fun, I decided to write this one as the game unfolded. So here we go.

Early on, it looked like this would be another one of those embarrassingly one-sided games. As someone indicated in the game thread, it was almost like JC was thinking, Why wait around for the bullpen to blow the game when I can do it myself? And he sure looked like he was trying. Went like this. First inning, they scored two. Second inning, nobody scored. Third inning, they scored two more. Fourth inning, JD went yard, which will probably win him the PTC. In the fifth, another one left the park. Do I really need to tell you which team hit it? But at least they only scored one that time.

In the sixth, JD hit another shot, further cementing his PTC claim and making the score 5-2 Orioles. Another run in the seventh, and it looked like we had a threat going, but we had to settle for just the one, making the score 5-3 Baltimore, heading into the bottom of the frame. And here came Boone Logan. As I write this, I can’t help wondering what flavor of Boone Logan we’ll be getting today. And how many relief pitchers Ozzie will blow through over the next two innings. (Sounds like a bad joke—How many relief pitchers does it take to put a game out-of-reach? Dunno; we’ll just have to keep putting them in until we find out.) Whoa! Was that three up, three down? On to the eighth!

Eighth inning time. Could this be the inning in which we start our amazing surge that leads to the playoffs? Win this game, go in and take three from Cleveland and three from Boston, and be on our merry way? Whoops, guess not. Three up, three down. We’ll just have to wait until the ninth to start that amazing surge that...etc.

Bottom eight. Logan’s still in, but for how long? Never mind; there’s your answer. Logan gives up a leadoff single and—HE GAWN! In comes contestant number two—Ryan Bukvich. So, two outs, runner on third. This can’t be good. But the Sox dodge the bullet and head into the ninth needing two to tie and three to take the lead. Due up: Uribe, Hall, and Owens. Strap it down, gang!

Top nine. Cintron hits for Uribe. Good plan, leadoff man on first. Hall strikes out looking (grrrr!). Owens steps in and swings so hard he nearly falls down. Too bad he missed the ball. Strike one. And Owens, too, strikes out looking. (dammit!) It’s up to Gooch now. Strike one. Strike two. Ball. Grounder. Game, set, match.

Yep, should’ve just renamed one of the old TBGRs. But look on the bright side. Now we get to go to Cleveland to start that amazing surge that..oh, skip it!

Back to the Grind Update:
Same old story. What grinding they did wasn't enough.
