07.07.07 Proves Lucky for the Sox

July 7 vs. Minnesota Twins

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Perfectly Grilled Bratwurst
Grinder Ball was seen in the only inning that the Sox scored, but at least it was visible!

Short Take: Buehrle being Buehrle equates to a 3-1 Sox victory against the Twins.

It was a hot, sunny, summer afternoon on the south side of Chicago. The ballpark was full and the fans hoped they'd see nothing even close to something resembling the debacle that was Friday! With Mark Buehrle on the mound, Sox fans were supremely confident that they'd be in for a quick, dominating game. Buehrle made quick work of the Twins in the eight strong innings he pitched, and he was helped out by a three-run bottom of the fourth inning, giving him more than enough run support.

Things were quiet on both ends until the bottom of the fourth inning. Jerry Ownes led off with a bunt single and promptly stole second- something Sox fans haven't seen much of these days. Tadahito Iguchi followed with a base hit between short & third, but Ownes had to make sure the ball wouldn't be caught, so he could only advance to third. Thome's fielder's choice to short plated Ownes, giving the Sox a 1-0 lead. Konerko then followed with a homerun to left that was just killed, scoring Thome ahead of him and giving the Sox a 3-0 lead.

Our beloved Buehrle was absolutely awesome out on the mound this afternoon. He scattered a measley six hits through eight innings and never allowed a runner to reach third base. Buehrle was also aided throughout the game by the defense behind him, who turned four double plays. When he left the hill at the end of the eighth, Mark Buehrle was the recipient of yet another thunderous standing ovation from the Sox faithful, and many of the fans repeatedly chanted his name, even after he was in the dugout; it was enough to give any Buehrle fan chills on this hot afternoon.

As the ninth inning arrived, the crowd started a "Re-sign Buehrle" chant that could clearly be heard on FOX. It's obvious that Sox fans desperately want a deal to get done, ensuring our ace a spot in the rotation on the south side for years to come.

As for the game itself, Ozzie called on All-Star Bobby Jenks to pitch the ninth and while he did eventually notch his 23rd save of the season, it wasn't without some struggles. He walked Michael Cuddyer with one out and then Justin Morneau singled, moving Cuddyer to third. Torii Hunter's sacrifice fly to to center plated Cuddyer, the only runner to dent home plate for the Twins. Jenks nailed the game down for Buehrle, who earned his sixth win of the season, and the 103rd of his career.

Our Sox will try to split the four game series under the blazing July sun tomorrow afternoon. The south siders will throw Javier Vazquez (5-5) against Carlos Silva (6-9). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05p CDT and the game will be televised on WGN.

Back to the Grind Update:
Grinder Ball was seen in fourth, the only inning the Sox dented the plate.
