WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Football is in the air

June 25 at Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Pot o' chili
Seems like something to have at a Bears game

Short Take:   Bear down, Chicago Bears!

The Chicago Bears travel to Tampa Bay for a preseason exhibition affair with the Buccaneers. It may be June but much of Chicago has thoughts of football on the brain. Something about one of the baseball teams not doing well has people looking to the pigskin for answers.

The Bucs kick the ball into the endzone and the Bears start at the 20. Muhammad takes the handoff and runs for no gain. Berrian runs to the left for a ten yard gain. Not too shabby a start. McKie drops the next pass but Clark catches the ensuing throw and laterals to Berrian who moves the ball to the Bucs goal line! Davis gets greedy though and fumbles on the first play. Bucs ball, 0-0 with 12:53 left in the 1st.

On the Bucs opening drive, Galloway and Clayton are victims of defensive holding and the ball moves 20 yards closer to the end zone. Williams makes the catch but is hit and Galloway recovers to put the Bucs in the Red Zone. The next play is nearly identical but this time, Galloway falls on the ball in the end zone. The extra point is good and the Bucs take a 7-0 lead. In a surprise move, they attempt an onside kick but Berrian falls on it.

The second Bears drive never really gains any momentum. First Benson can't catch up with the pass, then Hester fails to get his hands on one. Peterson finally wrestles on in for a nine yard gain. Too short, on comes the punting unit. The Bears bust out some surprises of their own with a fake punt but Hass can't advance the ball on the play. Turnover on downs.

3:02 left in the first as the Bucs start their second drive. Alstott gets his hands on one but can't haul in the throw. Becht also drops his pass. On third and ten, Boston slashes the Bears secondary and is wide open for a twenty yard gain! But the Bucs weren't done there. On the next snap, Garcia tosses the ball to Warren who in turn dumps it 20 yards downfield to a wide open Boston. Touchdown. The point is good and the Bucs jump out to an early 14-0 lead. The kickoff goes out the end zone and the Bears offense takes the field.

The Bears continue the air assault with a Muhammad ten yard gain to open the second quarter. They like that pass as Berrian wrestles in a little floater for another 10 yards. McKie fumbles the handoff but luckily falls right on top of it. The running game just can't get going. Clark attempts to hit the ground but goes nowhere. Davis can't get anywhere on the ground either but a penalty flag is out. Holding on the Bucs! The ball moves to the Bucs goal line! Benson swings out for a pass but is interfered with in the end zone. Using wacky mid-summer rules, this counts as a TD! The Bears are on the board! The extra point is good and it is a 14-7 contest.

Clayton drops the opening pass to start the next drive. Crawford runs to the right side but gets nowhere. Stovall drops his pass and the Bucs are forced to punt. The Bears get the ground game going on a Peterson 10 yard sprint. Hass can't wrangle in the throw and it is quickly second and ten. Muhammad hits the ground but again doesn't get far. But that all changes when Berrian pulls off an awesome open-field block to allow Peterson to score! The extra point is good, of course, and this game is knotted up at 14 apiece. The Bears really get wild on the kickoff and onside it! Not only do they recover but McKie is able to shovel it to Berrian who takes it to the house. Are you kidding me? 21-14, Bears!

Tampa Bay wasn't about to take this lying down. Hilliard can't complete the catch but it doesn't really matter since on the next play, Alstott heads out for a pass and no one covers him. He goes the distance and just like that, the Bears lead evaporates. A Bears penalty gives the ball back to the Bucs and a Boston 10 yard catch puts Tampa Bay right back into position to score again...which is exactly what they do. Warren sacrifices his body to let Becht score the easy TD. 28-21, Bucs. As quickly as the Bears had the lead, they not only lose it but actually trail. Someone better get these guys in gear. The next drive wouldn't be it though as a couple weak runs by Davis and Peterson and a Benson dropped pass is how the first half ends.

Tamp gets the ball to start the third quarter but do absolutely nothing. They get a gift on yet another Bears penalty but a couple weak runs and they are forced to punt. The Bucs coaching staff must not have liked what they were seeing from Garcia as he is yanked in favor of Simms. The Bears waste no time with their first drive of the second half. Hass grabs 10 through the air and Muhammad follows with a 20 yard catch of his own. Berrian helps Hass cross the line and the Bears have tied the game. The Bears get the ball back because the refs feel like they should have it. Simms is gone and Gradkowski is in for the Bucs (as if it matters since Chicago has the ball). Clark keeps the Bears on the scoring train and catches a 10 yard bullet good enough to let Muhammad score. 35-28, Bears!

Grossman is out for the Bears and here come Griese. Hilliard catches for what should be 10 yards but the Bears defense is napping and he ends up stretching it for another 10. Three straight dropped passes by Alstott, Boston and Warren negate the threat. The Bears take over with 3:11 remaining in the third quarter but can't do much to pad their lead. Hester runs nowhere and Peterson drops a pass. Tackling errors by the Bucs allow Hass to pick up some yardage but Muhammad blows his route and the pass is incomplete. Bring on the punting unit. Griese is out and Orton is in. A couple crappy runs by Galloway and Clayton, a dropped pass by Williams and just like that, the Bucs are punting.

Berrian has had an awesome game so far but drops the pass as the Bears start the 4th quarter. McKie continues to struggle and doesn't even get his hands on the ball. Why is he still in there and/or why do they keep throwing to him? Big deal as Clark can't catch either. The Bears turn it over to the Bucs. Orton is out and some no-name takes the field for the Bears. Wahhh?

The game is almost tied again as Stovall juuuuust can't hold onto it. Hilliard runs nowhere and it is quickly third down. Alstott can't handle the ball either and the Bucs are forced to punt. Time for the Bears to eat some clock. Tampa throws some other hack QB in there. What's with these teams not sticking with their starters? Davis starts the Bear drive by running but gets nowhere. Smart move though as time runs off the clock. Benson drops a pass and the clock stops. Not as smart a play. Hester also drops a pass and the Bears need to punt. Tampa Bay will get one more shot to try and put it in the end zone. The Bears are out of QBs so backup center Anthony Oakley will be taking snaps.

Becht nearly breaks run out by stellar pinball defense stops him in his tracks. They Bucs take to the air but Boston can't pull it in. Third and 10 now, within the two minute warning. Warren can't pull it in either and the Bucs have to go for broke. The pass is broken up by the defense and the Bears run out the clock! 35-28, Bears win! Bears win!

In other news, Tank Johnson was cut by the team. Shine on, you gun-crazy diamond.

Back to the Grind Update:
The Bears are always grinding, come Hell or high water.
