WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

June 10th vs. Houston Astros

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Fairly decent burger that almost came back up in the ninth.
This bullpen can turn even a cast-iron stomach.

Short Take:Mark Buehrle finally gets his 100th win, although it is nearly overshadowed by the pathetic bullpen, which insisted on conducting its usual seminar on how to make a win almost seem like a loss.

Haven’t checked the postgame thread yet, but I’m pretty sure we’ll have people there crying about the Sox relying (again) on the home run ball. Ya know what? For all I care, they can rely on sticking pins into voodoo dolls. Whatever leads to a win works for me these days. And this did. Final score: Sox 6, Astros 3.

Top of one, 3 up, 3 down. Bottom of one, same. Top of two, same. But in the bottom of the second, something amazing happened. Our leadoff batter (Konerko) got on base and ACTUALLY SCORED! End of two: Sox 1, Astros 0. In the top of three, Astros had a threat brewing with runners at the corners and one out, but some incredibly bad baserunning got us out of what could have been some real trouble. After three, Sox still led 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Paulie Konerko hit a shot that put us up 2-0. Astros went quietly in the top of five, and in the bottom of the frame a homerun by Luis Terrero, another by Juan Uribe, a bunt by Andy Gonzalez, a walk by Jim Thome, and a hit by Paulie made it 5-0. Three up, three down by both sides in the sixth. Then in the top of seven, Mike Lamb (who?) hit a homer to bust up Mark’s shutout. 5-1 temporarily, but we got the run back in the bottom of seven. Iguchi got a hit, then stole second. Gonzalez got a hit, scoring Gooch , then Big Jim walked. However, Paulie grounded into a double play to end the inning. The Astros went down in order in the eighth and after eight, the score stood at 6-1. However, storm clouds began to gather, as this reporter observed a pitcher warming up in the--well, I guess you could call it a bullpen.

Anyone else go “Oh, NOOOO!!” when Ozzie did not bring Mark out to complete the game? So okay, Dewon Day came on and got Carlos Lee to fly out. Then let’s see; I believe it went something like this—walk, walk, Boone Logan in relief, walk, Jenks in relief, wild pitch, and meanwhile, two runs have scored. All of a sudden, it was 6-3. Fortunately, Jenks managed to get Brad Ausmus and some guy named Scott out, so we eked out a win (after leading by five going into the ninth). PLEASE STOP THE MADNESS!!

(Deep breath) Well, now we take to the highway. Let’s hope we can put together a little non-losing streak. I don’t dare suggest a win streak until there’s some conclusive evidence that we’re capable of such a thing.

Back to the Grind Update:
Some grinding got done today; enough to get the win. That's the important part right now.
