WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

June 1 at Toronto Blue Jays

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Rib Eye Steak
Outstanding pitching and just enough timely hitting made all the difference in this one!

Short Take:Freshly recalled from Charlotte, Jerry Owens made his presence known, while Javier Vazquez baffled hitters all night long, as the losing streak ended tonight in shutout form! Our Sox got back in the good column with a 3-0 triumph over the Blue Jays at Skydome.

For the last week, things have not been very peachy for the team that we have all loved for years. Murphy's law settled in for five straight games, including Darin Erstad going down in last night's game, leaving question marks for what would happen in tonight's duel with the Toronto Blue Jays. Jerry Owens, Erstad's replacement, impressed all in his first game with the big club since last year, assisting Javier Vazquez and our Palehose to a 3-0 whitewash! Eureka! Is that a...WIN...that is going in the record books for our beloved?

The Good Guys got on the board fairly early in this one, hitting when it counted in the top of the third inning. With only one out, they were able to piece together three consecutive hits that resulted in a pair of runs. After a single by Juan Uribe, Owens got him over to third on a double to left. With ducks on the pond, both runners advanced on a passed ball, bringing home the first run of the game. Tadahito Iguchi singled in Owens before AJ Burnett got the last two batters out.

The 2-0 lead would follow our Sox until the eighth frame, when our latest call-up displayed something we have seen very little of the past couple of weeks--GRINDING out some hardcore offense. After Owens got an infield hit, he stole second on an 0-2 count on Iguchi, scoring on a hit by the same batter. Sox fans, this guy is very fast and will ink a place in your hearts the more he plays. Owens truly is a gamer.

The pathetic Blue Jays scattered six hits throughout the game; but, nobody was able to make it past third base all night long. Bobby Jenks, seeing action for the first time in a week, closed things out and recorded his 15th save of the season. When the camera showed a close-up of the Sox dugout at the conclusion of the game, everyone was quite excited over ending their skid. Hopefully this victory will be able to propell them to put together a nice streak of the other kind. Jose Contreras will look to do just that, as he faces the struggling Dustin McGowan. Gametime is at 12:07 and can be seen once again on Comcast Sports Net Chicago.

Back to the Grind Update:
In his first game since his call-up, Jerry Owens got an infield hit, stole second, and came home all in the eighth frame.
