An open letter to the 2007 White Sox

May 28 at Minnesota Twins

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Forgotten ribs
Someone left these on the grill too long and they are now dry and disliked.

Short Take:   White Sox roll around in the Dome for reasons unclear.

Dear 2007 Chicago White Sox,

It's been a while since I've written. Things are going okay on this end. The kids are growing up so fast! One day they are crawling around on the floor and the next they are off to college. It's true what they say, life goes by fast. Don't blink or you might miss it. But enough about me, how are things on your end? Looks like it has been a rough couple days for you guys. I caught most of your game today and have to ask, are you feeling okay? It seems like you'll go on a tear, winning several games in a row in dominating fashion and then going into hibernation for a few days. When the pitching is hot, the hitting is not and vice versa. Today's game was a microcosm of your entire season.

Like in the first inning when you allowed the first two Twins batters to reach on an infield single and bunt hit. Things looked bad but Contreras retired the next three in a row to strand the runners. Then in the second, Contreras got two quick outs before hitting a batter. The runner stole second and a single brought him home. A Contreras throwing error, a walk and a couple more hits and next thing I know, you guys are down 3-0. So after two innings, you had one that started bad and finished nicely and one that started nicely and finished bad. Up and down, all season long.

Terrero led off the third with a home run but the next three batters went down in order. Then Konerko had a solo shot in the fourth but like the third, it was the only hit of the inning. Why is it so hard for you to string something together? Are you having problems at home? Girl troubles? Troubles of any kind? Honestly, I'm baffled over here because in the sixth, you actually got something going. With one out, Thome walked and a Dye double moved him to third. Konerko singled to score them both and it looked like you were turning it around. Then Pierzynski hit into a double play to end the inning! Maddening! Despite the roller coaster ride, you were up by a run in the sixth against Santana, at home no less. But then it all fell apart...

In the bottom of the sixth, a pair of singles and sac bunt by the Twins gave them runners at second and third with one out. Then an RBI single and stolen base put the Twins in the same situation except now, the game was tied. Contreras issued a walk to load them up and that was enough for Ozzie. Logan was tagged to handle the situation. Did Ozzie lose his mind? Is he smoking crack? On the pipe? The last time Logan came in with the bases loaded, he gave up a two run single and the time before that, a grand slam! But Logan did his job and got the force at home. Where was this pitching earlier in the season? Up and down, up and down. Ozzie played the game of matchups once again and brought in Aardsma. An RBI single kept the bases loaded but gave the Twins the lead and a bases-clearing double pretty much sealed your fate. Terrero had a single in the 7th but it would be the only hit you would get for the rest of the game. Hunter's robbing of a Thome home run only further deflated your sails. You lost, 10-4.

So as I see it, you stand on a razor and the time has come to decide what kind of team you want to be for the rest of the season. Today's effort was just another example of the dizzying highs and bottomless lows that this entire season has been to date. I know you have the talent to go all the way but you seem depressed or something. Maybe we should get together and have a talk. Nothing formal, maybe a BBQ or something. I'm having some family and friends over next weekend so how does that date work for you? I'll invite the Milwaukee Brewers so you won't be the only MLB team there. I know what it feels like to be different. Do you need a friend? You and the Brewers can kick back a few beers, swap war stories, share your tales of triumphs and woes, whatever. I just want you to be happy. Keep in touch.

PS Tell Pablo I send my best wishes in a speedy recovery.

Back to the Grind Update:
The Sox left the grinder back at the hotel. The maid and bellhops used it to build a fort out of the cusions in Ozzie's room.
