160-2 still possible

April 4 vs. Cleveland Indians

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Dog Food
More crappy pitching a la 2006.

Short Take: Slugfest goes Cleveland's way as Sox still winless in 2007.

The start of this 2007 season so far has looked like the 2006 season. Mediocre starting pitching, bad bullpen outings, and bad situational hitting. Still, never fear the season is very very young. But today's 8-7 loss to the Cleveland Indians keeps our Sox winless on the year.

On a cold afternoon on the South Side, Jim Thome gave the faithful some early thrills by blasting a Jake Westbrook offering to the right center field seats for a 3-run home run giving the Sox a 3-0 first inning lead. But, faster than Hawk can say "You can put it on the board," the Indians smacked around Sox starter Jon Garland in the top half of the second for four runs on five hits. The Indians made it 5-3 in the top of the fourth on a Victor Martinez RBI single.

Tadahito Iguchi tied the game with a 2-run home run (his first home run of the year) in the bottom of the fourth and in the fifth Joe Crede gave the Sox a 7-5 lead with a 2-run RBI single.

It seemed Garland didn't enjoy having a nice lead to work with because after the Sox gave him a two run lead, he quickly came out and made the game a bit closer when Victor Martinez made it a 7-6 game with a RBI double. Ozzie's "short leash" finally yanked Garland after 5 1/3 less than stellar innings of work. Mike MacDougal came on to end the Indians' threat in the sixth and lasted into the seventh until he walked Andy Marte on four pitches after striking out the first two batters of the inning. Matt Thorton came on and promtly served up a 2-run home run to Grady Sizemore to put the Indians up 8-7.

It could've been worse, the Indians loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth off Matt Thorton. But new guy David Aardsma struck out the side to end a potential disaster.

The Sox did try today though. A.J. Pierzynski led off the eighth with a double, but much like where the '06 club failed, today's guys couldn't get A.J. and his pinch runner Pablo Ozuna over to third and home to tie the game. In the ninth, new Indians closer Joe Borowski walked Darin Erstad and Paul Konerko but with one out, the Sox failed to get anything going. Jermaine Dye struck out on a check swing and Joe Crede was robbed on one hell of a catch by Jason Michaels when Crede drove a ball to the wall in left. Michaels fell to the ground but made a basket catch while falling to end the game. Damn.

Our Sox are 0-2 on the season and tomorrow Mark Buehlre will try and be the stopper he once was when he goes for his first start on the '07 season. The Indians counter with Jeremy Sowers. Game time is at 1:05pm and will be televised on WGN. Let's get a win eh boys?

Back to the Grind Update:
A failed bunt by Iguchi to move over A.J., Podsednik is caught stealing. 5 of the 7 runs scored on the long ball.
