An ode to 2007

April 2 vs. Cleveland Indians

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Ground Beast
The animal this cut of meat came from cannot be found on this World

Short Take:
There once was a team named the White Sox
Who stumbled right out of the start block
And Cleveland struck quick
The Sox wounds they'll lick
'til they wake by sound of alarm clock

The month it was April, the date 'twas the second
Sounds of Opening Day in Chicago, I reckon
The Sox were at home playing host to the Tribe
A much hated foe is as best to describe

The crowd was electric, the weather was warm
Would the Sox be on deck and ready to perform?
Jose was the pitcher selected this day
To open the season, to enter the fray

The first pitch a ball, yeah, big deal, so what?
but the second was much like a punch to the gut
Sizemore made contact, the ball it did soar
A homer it was, 1-0 the score

It would not be the only run plated that frame
All told there were five the Indians would claim
They scored with the homer, the single and triple
Contreras looked shaky, not wave but a ripple

But the Sox had some runs of their own to be scored
Ozuna led off and was quickly aboard
The newcomer Erstad was next at the plate
His first Sox at-bat was one that was great

He would not dissapoint, put the Sox on the board
A homer of his own and the game was restored
The joy would be brief as the second began
Contreras appeared to be lacking a plan

A walk and two hits plus a Uribe error
Equals two more runs, continues the terror
Contreras was done, just one inning, the hook
ERA of six-three would go down in the book

Masset the replacement, he wasn't much better
Gave up three over three with two walks on the letter
The offense brought one more with Nick on the mound
CC was crusing, continued to confound

He waivered for a moment in the bottom of the third
Konerko solved the crossword clue and "homer" was the word
But the Sox trailed by eight and they needed more runs
They needed some hits and they needed them tons

Sisco relieved Masset, a pleasant delight
Six up and six down, he did everything right
He got some help from Erstad and Ozuna
Running catches at the wall, o fortuna!

The offense still lagged but had chance in the sixth
Bases loaded, one out, but the bats took the Fifth
Iguchi popped out, AJ went down swinging
The Sox threat was ended and the Inidians were singing

Aardsma was the next Sox to take to the bump
Could he keep the Indans bats in a slump?
His effort was decent, one run over two
but the bats wouldn't help him, they still swung like poo

The ninth came around, Bobby Jenks led the charge
Three up, three down, he was living it large
So now brought the time for the final at-bats
The Tribe was in charge, feather in their hats

The Sox scored a pair but too late was the drive
The Good Guys were bested, a dozen to five
It would seem that the Sox were doomed from the start
A hole much to deep did the pitching impart

The fans were left wanting and longing for more
Will Wednesday result in a favorful score?
On this downer day a lone bright spot exists
No need to drown sorrows deep in the abyss

The season is young, just a few hours old
There will be many Sox victories to behold!
So lift high your heads and so lift high your hearts!
The Tigers lost too so we're tied on the charts...

Back to the Grind Update:
Ozuna turns a single into a double and makes a running catch into the wall. Grind on, you crazy grinding diamond...
