Chicago Proud
for Our Sox!

Thanks from Billy Pierce

Thanksgiving, 2006

In the wake of the Sox world championship victory, I was approached by the representatives of Author House Publishing about the possibility of editing a book of dedications by Sox Fans at the moment in time all of us had waited a lifetime to experience: the first baseball championship for Chicago in 88 years. I accepted the project.

Pick up your copy and relive what makes you thankful for being a Sox Fan.
You can purchase a copy here, too.

It's been exactly eight years since White Sox Interactive was born on Thanksgiving Day, 1998. In those eight years I've learned there are exactly two things I can count on. The first is that I'll be here updating the features and main page of White Sox Interactive every week. I may not have the time to do everything I want to, but mine is the same struggle we all fight to find balance between family and work. WSI gets my attention every week... eight years straight, an eternity in the cyber world. Thanks for being here with me.

The other thing I can count on, as WSI's founder and editor, are the countless unsolicited offers and opportunities of dubious merit. I reject all of these, searching for the one or two that make sense for what the website has become. The offer from Author House made sense for White Sox Interactive if I made just one major tweak in their formula: I asked that the proceeds from such a venture must go to a worthy cause. And thus I accepted the offer to write and edit the project on their behalf, with the understanding that royalties generated would go to my charity of choice: Billy Pierce's Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities.

Now one year later, Mission Accomplished.

The book "Dedicated to..." stands as the one and only piece of White Sox memorabilia that has absolutely nothing to do with The Team, though they are heroes deserving our eternal gratitude. "Dedicated to..." has absolutely nothing to do with Team Ownership or MLB Properties, though they deserve everything they have coming their way, including the mountains of cash Sox Fans like me throw their way. Most of all, "Dedicated to..." has absolutely nothing to do with Sportswriters, the people paid to cover the team and offer their perspective on events, too often dreamed up merely to focus attention on themselves. None of these people speak for Sox Fans.

Not a single word inside "Dedicated to..." was written by anyone other than a Sox Fan. That's what makes it unique! It's also why it is destined to become the most cherished bit of Sox memorabilia I own, even outstripping my replica 2005 Sox World Series trophy paperweight. The book just keeps giving the way a photo, a cap, a shirt, an autograph, or any other money-making collection of thoughts by a sportswriter ever can.

It's a time capsule of one precise moment in time that hasn't been seen in 88 years, and could be many more years before it's repeated, written by the very people affected the most by The Event for they are the ones who've spent a lifetime waiting for The Event, and too often attending the funerals of those waiting for The Event -- but simply couldn't wait any longer. It's touching in a way the books written by employees at the Tribune, Sun-Times, ESPN and Sports Illustrated can't even begin to fathom.

And it all went to a worthy cause. How's that for special...

Happy Birthday to White Sox Interactive. It's now eight years old. I'm thankful for that. And she isn't going anywhere. That's a promise. And as for history, consider picking up your copy of "Dedicated to..." and remember what made you a Sox Fan and what on God's Green Earth makes you thankful at this time, too.

Dear George,

Thank you for the donation of $541.50 from White Sox Interactive to the Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities.

Your contribution, along with the other money raised this year, will be presented to Northwestern Memorial and Children Memorial Hospitals at our annual meeting in January.

Personally, my thanks to you for the book of dedications. My wife and I have enjoyed reading the different way the White Sox fans expressed their feelings. It was a great time for all of us.
