Lousy Late Night Letdown

September 12 at Los Angeles Angels

How was the trophy defended today?
The pitching was solid, but just not solid enough.

Short Take: The Southsiders rassle Los Angeles to a 3-3 draw, but the Sox bats fall silent late and a smallball rally in the 11th wins it for the Angels.

Oh the irony. The cruddy, cruddy irony.

A fast-moving game in Anaheim saw Mark Buehrle duel Ervin Santana to a 3-3 draw after seven innings in a closely fought contest. After that, the bullpens took turns shutting the other side down all the way to the eleventh inning, when the Angels played smallball and manufactured the game-winning run off struggling closer Bobby Jenks for a 4-3 final.

There were signs of trouble early for Buehrle, who walked Vladdy Guerrero, then gave up a 2-run homer to Juan Rivera in the first inning. While Sox fans were reaching for their chemical relaxants, Buehrle settled down. Even though his curve wasnít biting very hard, Burls induced almost a dozen groundouts (eight in a row at one point) and held the Angels offence in check for most of the game.

Meanwhile, the Sox awoke from a snoozy start to rally in the fifth. A.J. Pierzynski and Joe Crede led off with singles. Another single, this time by Rob Mackowiak drove A.J. home and Crede to second. Juan Uribe followed with a sac bunt to move the runners along, and Scott Podsednik walked to load the bases. This set up a two-run single by Tadahito Iguchi to give the Sox a 3-2 lead. Pods tried to steal third and seemed to pull up before sliding feet first. It was a head-scratching move to say the least. Pods was clearly out and the rally ended on a flyout by Jermaine Dye.

The Angels tied the score in the sixth inning. Guerrero doubled off Buehrle, then moved to third on a ground out. Garret Anderson drove him home with a single, and the score would remain deadlocked into extra innings.

After the starters departed, the bullpens of both teams worked scoreless eighth, ninth and tenth innings. The Sox had good outings from Dustin Hermanson, Matt Thornton, and Jenks to that point. In the eleventh, Ross Gload, a late-inning replacement for Paul Konerko banged a two-out, hard-running double to put himself in scoring position. Pierzynski was unable to cash him in, and it was back to Jenks for the eleventh.

The Angelsí Anderson singled and was lifted for pinch runner Tommy Murphy. Murphy moved to second on a sac bunt and third on a fielderís choice. With two outs, Chone Figgins blooped the winning single in front of Brian Anderson and Jenks was the goat once again. While Jenks gets tagged with the loss, the Sox offence did little to support the bullpen, with just two hits over the last six innings of the game. Cruddy, cruddy stuff.

The Sox look to win this series on Wednesday afternoon. Freddy Garcia (13-9, 5.02) will go to the bump against LHP Joe Saunders (5-2, 3.76). Game time is 2:35pm Central.

Ozzieball Update:
Uribeís sac bunt in the 4th set up Iguchiís 2-run single that gave the Sox the lead.
