Hey, Wha' Happened?!

June 14 at Texas Rangers

How was the trophy defended today?
It wasn't

Short Take: The Rangers make playthings of the White Sox as the south siders turn in a dismal performance.

Hey, wha happened?! After two solid victories in Arlington, the White Sox let the home side run wild as the Texas Rangers beat them 8-0, on a night where both the offence and pitching were unable to get it done.

Javier Vazquez faced off against Vicente Padilla on this night. Padilla set the tone in the top of the second inning by plunking A.J. Pierzynski in the shoulder on his first pitch. Pierzynski would be stranded on base and face Padilla again in the top of the fourth inning. In a ballsy move, Padilla plunked A.J. again. Pierzynski was none too pleased, nor was Ozzie Guillen who had some words for the umpire. Both sides were warned, and the incident went without retaliation by the Sox. Padilla ended up throwing eight shutout innings as the Sox offence just never got going.

Meanwhile, the Rangers beat up on Vazquez. Hank Blalock hit a solo home run in the second inning, and the Rangers rocked Javy for six more hits in the third inning, ringing up a 5-0 score in the process. Gary Matthews Jr. hit another solo homer in the sixth inning. Vazquez would not return for the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Rangers manufactured two more runs off of reliever Agustin Montero, bringing the final score of this game to a harrowing 8-0. Hey, wha happened?!

As mentioned, the Sox did not retaliate for A.J.s two plunkings. However, Mark Buehrle (6-4, 3.21) will be on the mound for the final game of this series tonight. Mark has shown in the past that he will stand up for his teammates even at the expense of his personal stats. Buehrle will be opposed by rookie Ranger John Rheinecker (2-0, 2.42). Heres hoping the Sox put this lousy performance behind them and return to their winning ways.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Well, um, Ken Harrelson wore a very nice tropical shirt this evening. It was all downhill from there.
