WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Okay, This Isn't Funny Anymore

June 2 vs. Texas Rangers

How was the trophy defended today?
It wasn't.

Short Take: Jim Thome is sidelined with a leg injury, his teammates deliver a mediocre performance, and the Sox bullpen lets another game get away late. This sucks!

Aye Carumba! The Sox returned to U.S. Cellular Field looking to break out of their recent funk, but played a crappy game and let the Texas Rangers walk away with the first game of this series, 4-3.

There was a shakeup to the Sox lineup just before gametime, as Big Jim Thome was scratched with a strain in his left quad area. Paul Konerko took Thome’s place at DH, while Ross Gload made his second consecutive start at first base.

Texas got on the board first when Jon Garland gave up a two-run homer to Brad Wilkerson in the second inning. The Sox lineup mounted a comeback off of Rangers’ starter Kameron Loe in the fourth inning. Konerko, Jermaine Dye, Joe Crede and Gload each singled (Gload drove in Konerko). A couple of fielder’s choices hit by Juan Uribe and Brian Anderson scored a couple more, and the Sox had the lead 3-2. Unfortunately, after this brief uprising, the Sox would be shutout the rest of the game as several scoring opportunities were squandered.

Garland pitched a decent game and lasted into the seventh inning. After walking Rangers’ centerfielder Gary Matthews with two outs, he was replaced by Jeff Nelson. Nelson promptly gave up a double to Michael Young, scoring the speedy Matthews all the way from first. The game was tied at three.

At this point, it came down to the bullpens and the Rangers won this battle. After throwing a perfect 1-2-3 eighth inning, Brandon McCarthy gave up a walk to rookie number nine hitter Ian Kinsler. Bobby Jenks then gave up a double to Matthews that scored Kinsler. The Sox were unable to come back in the ninth, and Texas won 4-3.

Garland got a no-decision in this game, and McCarthy got dinged with an undeserved loss, but that’s what happens when the bullpen can’t close games out. The Sox look to rebound Saturday evening in the second game of this series. Did you ever think you’d hear the phrase “We now look hopefully to Javier Vazquez (6-3, 3.86) to be the stopper of this losing streak”? That’s the case as Javy faces Vicente Padilla (5-3, 4.57). Game time is 6:05 Central. Let’s Go White Sox! Losing streaks suck!
