Pablo Loves the Core!

May 22 vs Oakland A's

How was the trophy defended today?
Thrilling come back win on Core of the Core Night!

Short Take:  Frank Thomas's return to the cell is highlighted by a comeback win over the A's!

Pablo Ozuna must love the Core. At last year's Core of the Core party he gave us our lone thing to cheer about...stealing home. This year Ozuna capped off a late inning rally on a bunt to score A.J. Pierzysnki in the tenth inning for the 5-4 win.

But what won't be lost in this amazing game was the return of the greatest player in White Sox history- Frank Thomas. He returned to the Cell Monday night sporting his green jersey that just didn't look right. Thomas was greeted with cheers and a rousing standing ovation from the 39,000+ who attended the game. Thomas tipped his helmet and proceeded to hit a solo home run off Jon Garland making reality set in that Thomas is no longer with the "good guys" anymore.

The next batter Bobby Crosby went back to back with Thomas in the second inning off Garland to make it a 2-0 A's lead.

It looked like the Core was going to get a long painful night by Garland and the Sox. Garland was roughed up even more in the third. With two outs and runners on the corners, Bobby Crosby smacked a RBI single to center scoring one more. In the fifth, Thomas again would take Garland deep. Another solo shot made it a 4-0 A's lead. Garland was able to make it into the seventh inning. He was pulled after a Mark Kotsay one out single to make way for Matt Thornton. Thornton was able to keep A's hitters in check to provide the spark.

The Sox managed to score a run off Zito in the fifth on a sac fly by Paul Konerko. But, the Sox dialed long ball in the eighth to tie the game. Jermaine Dye led off innocently enough with a solo home run making it 4-2. After Joe Crede struck out and pinch hitter A.J. Pierzynski flew out, Juan Uribe doubled which brought in Houston Street. Rob Mackowiak pinch hit for Brian Anderson and Mackowiak showed his south side pride on the first offering from Street. Mackowiak delievered a two run homer to tie the game 4-4.

Bobby Jenks came in the ninth and tenth to shut the door on the A's setting up a extra inning spectacular. With one out A.J. Pierzynski walked, two batters later Mackowiak singled moving A.J. to third base. Pablo Ozuna came up next and totally stunned the A's infield. Ozuna layed down the perfect bunt with A.J. in full motion from third. The ball got past the pitcher's mound and the throw was wild to first base making Ozuna safe and the winning run to score!

The fireworks blew off and no Sox fan was disapointed tonight. After seeing Thomas belt two home runs, their world champs won a thrilling extra inning game. The win puts the Sox at 29-15, still one game behind the Tigers. Tuesday, Javier Vazquez will try and rebound from his loss in Tampa Bay against Kirk Saarloos. Game time is 7:05pm and the game can be seen on WCIU.
