Meltdown in Minny

May 13 at Minnesota Twins

How was the trophy defended today?
It wasn't.

Short Take: Vazquez pounded, Ozzie tossed as Sox implode in suffering third loss in a row.

The White Sox squandered an early 4-0 lead and lost 8-4 tonight in a game in which they were in complete control until the fateful 5th inning.

The Sox got on the board in the second inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Joe Crede, scoring Jermaine Dye who had walked and gone to third on a one-out double by A.J. Pierzynski. The Sox added another run in the third inning off Twins starter Brad Radke. Scott Podsednik led off the inning with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Konerko, putting the Sox up 2-0.

Sox starting pitcher Javier Vazquez was cruising, holding the Twins to just 2 hits over the first four innings. The Sox padded their lead in the 5th, jumping on Radke for two more runs to take an apparently commanding 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 5th. But baseball is a funny game, and tonight was a good example of why you never take a win for granted.

The Twins started the bottom of the 5th with two singles, and pushed their first run across on a sacrifice fly by Shannon Stewart to get on the board. With two outs, Luis Castillo hit a ball back to Vazquez and the controversy began. Castillo beat out an infield hit on a close play at first, a call which could have gone either way. Instead of ending the inning, however, the Twins were just getting started. Joe Mauer followed the play with an RBI single to cut the Sox lead in half at 4-2. Torii Hunter then singled Castillo home, and like that the score was 4-3. Michael Cuddyer was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. The only problem was, Cuddyer was in the middle of swinging at the pitch which would have been strike 3 and ended the inning. Cuddyer clearly did not stop his swing in time, but the umpires awarded him first anyway. Ozzie Guillen came out to argue the call, dropped a few choice words, and was ejected. With the bases now loaded, Justin Morneau singled home two more runs and the Twins took a 5-4 lead.

The Sox chased Radke in the 6th inning, thanks to a two-out double by Alex Cintron. Twins phenom Francisco Liriano relieved Radke, and essentially shut the door on the Sox offense. Liriano pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit ball, striking out 4 Sox in the process. The Twins padded their lead in the 6th, when Castillo hit a two-run homer off Vazquez to put the Twins ahead 7-4. That was the end of the night for Vazquez, who allowed 7 earned runs and 10 hits with 2 strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. The Twins added another run in the 8th off reliever Cliff Politte to go up 8-4, which would be the final score.

The Sox will look to break their three-game skid tomorrow night, as Mark Buehrle (3-2, 3.66) faces off against Carlos Silva (2-5, 8.23). Gametime is 7:05 pm CDT, and it is the Sunday night game of the week telecast on ESPN. Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms out there!

Ozzieball Update:
Manufactured some runs early until the wheels fell off in the bottom of the 5th.
